Athens, GA.  - The South Carolina Gamecocks Football team hits the road again in it's conference opener for 2021, as it travels to Athens, GA. to take on it's fierce Divisional rival in the Georgia Bulldogs. The game - the conference opener for both teams - kicks off Saturday the 18th at 7:00 p.m. E.T. in Sanford Stadium. The Gamecocks (2-0, 0-0) are coming in off of a close 20-17 win over East Carolina in Greenville, N.C., while the 2nd-ranked Georgia Bulldogs (2-0, 0-0) await after pummeling Alabama-Birmingham 56-7.

The game will be broadcast on ESPN - Sean McDonough will call the action for ESPN. He will be joined in the booth by Todd Blackledge. Molly McGrath will patrol the sidelines. The familiar voices of Carolina Hall of Famers Todd Ellis and Tommy Suggs handle the call for the Gamecock Radio Network with Jamar Nesbit on the sidelines.

CAROLINA VS. GEORGIA: This is the 74th meeting between these two bordering flagship state universities. Georgia leads the all-time series by a 52-19-2 margin, including a 29-9 mark in Athens and a 21-10-2 advantage in Columbia. Since becoming SEC Eastern Division rivals in 1992, the Bulldogs own a 19-10 lead in the series, including a 9-5 mark in Athens.

CLOSER IN THE MORE RECENT PAST: Georgia holds a slim 6-5 advantage in games played since 2010. Carolina won three-straight from 2010-12, its longest winning streak in the series, and won again in 2014 and 2019. Georgia countered with a win in 2013 and four-straight from 2015-18 before winning in Columbia last season.

THE LAST TIME THEY MET: The No. 13/10 Georgia Bulldogs put up 21 first-quarter points and never looked back in a 45-16 win over South Carolina on Nov. 28, 2020 in the Gamecocks' season home finale. Georgia did most of the damage on the ground, rushing for 332 yards on 46 carries, a 7.2-yard average. True freshman Luke Doty made his first career start and responded by connecting on 18-of-22 passes for 190 yards with a touchdown and an interception. With Shi Smith sidelined, tight end Nick Muse stepped up with the best game of his career, an eight-catch, 131-yard, one-touchdown performance.

THE LAST TIME THEY MET IN ATHENS: In the high point of the 2019 season for Carolina, the Gamecocks went into Athens on Oct. 12 and knocked off the No. 3/3 Bulldogs by a 20-17 mark in double-overtime. Israel Mukuamu was the star of the game, intercepting three Jake Fromm passes, including a 53-yard pick-six in the upset win. Parker White connected on a 24-yard field in the second overtime, before Rodrigo Blankenship missed from 42, providing the winning score. Georgia outgained Carolina 468-297 on the afternoon, but four turnovers proved costly for the Dawgs. The win matched the best road win for Carolina in school history.

Thoughts before kick-off

The Gamecocks have shown flashes of a team that might be a bit ahead of schedule from what we anticipated in the preseason. The Gamecocks' defensive line, which, to be fair, projected as a strength — ranks No. 1 nationally in pass rushing, according to Pro Football Focus. The Gamecocks has also only allowed two touchdowns through matchups with ECU and Eastern Illinois first 2 weeks of the season.

While the defense has been stout, The Gamecocks' offense has been hit or miss. The Gamecocks offensive line ranks among the SEC’s worst in pass protection, though some of that’s been brought on by missed assignments and poor protection calls from quarterback Zeb Noland.

Talking about quarterbacks, it’s not altogether clear whether Noland will actually get the start Saturday. Beamer told listeners during his weekly radio show Thursday that Luke Doty, who was penciled in as QB1 ahead of the year before suffering a sprained foot in preseason, continues to progress.  Coach Beamer didn’t go so far as to say he’d play, but there’s a chance we could see Doty for the first time all season in Athens.

Offensively, the Gamecocks found a spark last week with freshman running back Juju McDowell. McDowell notched 11 touches for 71 yards, all of which came in the second half, as he paced a mostly anemic Gamecock rushing attack in Greenville vs. ECU. His 63-yard fourth quarter kick return also set up White for a game-tying kick with just under seven minutes remaining.

McDowell should split carries with the Gamecocks' dynamic quartet of tailbacks that include Kevin Harris, MarShawn Lloyd and ZaQuandre White, but expect the freshman to get in on the action again Saturday.

I really think after the turn around in the 2nd half last week, we are a better team than most think but we have a long ways to go yet. Beamer has been recruiting really good, but they have also been working on what will make the players we have now be a good team. Are we good enough to upset UGA again? Probably not, but on any given day, a player can be way better than expected. I really just hope for a close game. The last thing I want is a 30 point blow out.

Today is the day Beamer and staff can really show us how great it was to hire him. If they can take the players we got now, and put on a good showing, our recruiting will take off. Those kids will believe Beamer when he says he is building the next SEC East champion. I really appreciate that guys like Enagbare and Sandridge, Vann and White, and especially Parker decided to stay here. Those guys could have been gone, but they are true Gamecocks and stayed to show that we still got some gut.

I really feel that Zeb will start just because he has playing time and really looked good the 2nd half last week. If our Quartet of runners can find some holes and keep a little heat off of him, he will shine in his hometown. If UGA does start getting to him, Doty will come in because he is a lot more mobile. After that, thank you Zeb but Doty will carry us from here on.

UGA is awful against the wildcat. I really think Dakereon is going to get in there and hurt them some, especially when Satterfield puts him back there and they expect another run but it is a passing play and he throws a bomb to Vann for a TD.

I would love the upset but I think it will be UGA 24 Gamecocks 17 and in the next 2 weeks we get 3 more strong commitments.

Daniels takes the field for UGA. They drive pretty easily for the touchdown. What was doubly hurtful for the Gamecocks was LB Sherrod Greene appears to have suffered a leg injury, and looks like his season is done.

The Gamecocks offense comes out. They hit on a huge 61-yd pass play from Zeb Noland to Josh Vann to get into the UGA redzone. They stall out at the 19-yd line, but Parker White kicks the field goal, and the Gamecocks are on the scoreboard. UGA leads 7-3.

On a pass attempt on the final offensive play prior to the FG, Noland's passing arm is hit as he tried to make the pass, and he comes out looking injured. One thing we CANNOT take is a rash of injuries...

UGA comes back out, and moves 75 yds on 6 plays and score again. They lead 14-3 with 7 minutes left in the 1st Qtr. This is not looking good right now.

Noland is headed to the lockerroom.....

Luke Doty comes into the game now......

UGA has the ball - Daniels is INTERCEPTED by Jalen Foster, who returns it down to the UGA 12!! But our offense is only able to gain 3 more yds, and Parker White comes on for the field goal, which he makes it from 27 yds. UGA leads 14-6 at the start of the 2nd Quarter.....

Crap luck having QB injury early in the game. Agree about unnecessary penalties.  That has to be fixed. Doty wasn't ready to start this game.

Maybe Jawja will carry Muscramp off the field just like Clemsux did with Brad Scott after he drove our team and university into the ground.  Two guys who live in infamy, and made a shit ton of money at USC.

There are no good losses, but I have to say, I saw some real positives.  Doty looks like he could be stellar behind a solid O-line.  At long last, Vann has come to play.  We even got pressure in their backfield for a couple of sacks, several hurries and tackles for loss, and a fair (but uneven) run defense.  And we did end up winning the turnover battle.

I expected the loss, but because of the potential our boys showed, it wasn't painful or dismaying.  By season's end, I think we'll pull off some wins that no one's expecting, and I'm optimistic that we might even make a decent bowl.  Bring on KU.
