The 3-0 Gamecocks showed up in the national rankings for the first time with a tie for 20th in the UPI poll after beating Georgia in Game 3. The ranking jumped to 14th UPI and 17th AP, and the record went to 4-0 with a 49-17 drubbing of Big Eight member, Kansas State. Thomas Dendy scored two touchdowns, while Poole, Hold, Kent Hagood, Chris Corley and Jerry Dunlap had one each. Eleven different Gamecocks had rushing attempts with 78 yards by Hagood and 72 by Raynard Brown.

Carolina elected to keep the ball on the ground for most of the Notre Dame game due to the rainy game day weather.

Taking to the road after five straight home games, the Gamecocks trailed Notre Dame 17-14 at halftime and fell behind 26-14 after turning the football over on the first three possessions of the second half.

A 73-yard drive produced Hold's quarterback sneak for a touchdown and Kent Hagood's two-point plunge cut the deficit to 26-22 with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game. Hold directed a 75 yard drive, scrambling the final 33 when he could not find an open receiver, to give Carolina a 29-26 lead five minutes later. Rick Rabune recovered a Notre Dame fumble less than a minute later and Quinton Lewis scored to give Carolina a 10-point lead, 36-26.

Chris Major broke up a two-point conversion attempt and Earl Johnson intercepted a pass, with 1:40 remaining to preserve a 36-32 win. Carolina vaulted into the nation's top 10, eighth in UPI and ninth in AP.

A national (ABC-TV) television audience and a Williams-Brice Stadium record crowd of 75,000 was treated to Carolina's finest performance of the year in a 38-26 triumph over Florida State, which came into the Gamecocks' ninth game of the season 6-1-1 and ranked nationally .

After falling behind 7-0, Carolina tied it on Dendy's 57-yard run and before the Seminoles were to cross the goal line again, Carolina ran up a 38-7 lead, intercepting a school record of seven passes — four of them by Bryant Gilliard — to improve their record to 9-0 and vault to the second spot in the national polls.
