2025 Portal Window

Gamecocks land their first portal commitment, 7'-0" center Christ Essandoko from Providence. He has two years of eligibility left to play.

Yeah, and that 700+ number was just in the first 24 hours of the portal opening. It's up over 1,000 players now, and more will be entering as teams get bounced from the Tourney. Apparently Indiana has lost the entire team through either end of eligibility or transfer portal -- 0 scholarship athletes left on the team.

Looks like another basketball commitment: https://www.si.com/college/southcar...-what-it-means-for-the-gamecocks-01jqkw6z33yx

Appears to be a really good shooting guard.
This is a HUGE grab for Coach Paris and staff! A premier scorer, nationally known, and a guy who can give you easy double digits per game. He’s a score first guard, in my mind, but really does a good job of putting others in the right place for THEM
to score as well.
LOVE this get!!
And if the Meechie Johnson thing materializes, I’m not mad at that either.
The name I’m intrigued by is Kobe Knox from S. Florida. He’s another high octane scorer, which we REALLY need right now. Looks like Coach Paris is trying to build a team next year that will resemble the old Arkansas Razorback run and gun style team.

Bringing Meechie back would be crazy, that would make for the absolute shit talkingest backcourt in America with Ellis! If Scott can put on some weight, muscle and progress with his athleticism he will thrive with them in the midrange and slash game!

Just to try and keep track of roster options...
On current team: Ugusuk, Butler, Scott and Federiko (total 4)

Still unknown: CMB and Stute (total 2)

High school recruits: Ellis, Walker, Polk and Assemain (total 4)

Portal transfers: Eaglestaff and Essandoko (total 2)

So we still have 3-5 spots available to fill. Think we still have to grab a PG, a good swing (preferably that can play defense), and another big or power forward.

Earlier this week, Johnson talked with The Dispatch in his first public comments since his departure from the club.

“My therapist, if you talked to her, I was disappointed in a lot of things, not from an Ohio State standpoint but just within myself in how a lot of things went and how I wasn’t able to be there on the court with my team,” he said. “I’ve seen a lot of things: ‘Oh, he quit.’ Nah, that’s just not what happened at all.” Johnson is eligible for a mental health medical hardship waiver that should allow him a sixth season of college basketball.
Could/should Lamont take him back if he could?

I'm kind of indifferent to it at this point. It's my understanding that Meechie and the staff have spoken and there is some interest in both sides, but Meechie has expressed an interest to go through the recruiting process.

I have no first hand information, but in my mind that screams Meechie is chasing a bag. If coach thinks he can contribute and has done his due diligence, I'm good either way. At this point, the kid has baggage and should be paid accordingly because of the risk.

I believe that Coach Paris was surprised when Meechie initially departed. Yes, they had a bit of a love/hate relationship, but Coach Paris brought the best out of Meechie when Meechie would listen and play by Coach P’s “rules”. Meechie’s baggage is a known quantity for the Gamecocks, and he gives you flash from a national spotlight (because of his deep shot prowess) that we need to have. Yes, he’s prolly chasing NIL, but I don’t see much downside to grabbing him. We’ve still got room for another guard after Meechie, so it seems win-win to me.

For what it's worth, there is a staff reporter from a pay wall site that is saying multiple sources is telling him that Meechie will be coming back to the Gamecocks. Even if he's not playing point, he definitely upgrades our ability to bring the ball up the court. He was a streaky shooter for us, but showed the ability to finish at the rim. I do believe he was good enough to obtain 2nd team SEC for us. I firmly believe Coach knows the importance of this portal season, so if he's good with adding Meechie, I'm not going to second guess.
