2025 Portal Window

At a minimum Meechie brings experience playing big time basketball, a no fear of the next shot attitude and some built in confidence!

For what it's worth, there is a staff reporter from a pay wall site that is saying multiple sources is telling him that Meechie will be coming back to the Gamecocks. Even if he's not playing point, he definitely upgrades our ability to bring the ball up the court. He was a streaky shooter for us, but showed the ability to finish at the rim. I do believe he was good enough to obtain 2nd team SEC for us. I firmly believe Coach knows the importance of this portal season, so if he's good with adding Meechie, I'm not going to second guess.
Someone with ties to Ohio told me the speculation was pretty strong that he is coming back here.

We would still need another strong G like Ta'Lon if he came back to Columbia regardless.

I think the reason he gave was something along the lines of a grandfather that was ill.

Yes, and I definitely agree that we need a strong PG that can distribute and facilitate while playing lockdown defense.

Paris leaned heavily on Johnson, and he grew into a double-digit scorer during both of his seasons with the program. Being away from home was tough, though, and while he was in South Carolina the Johnson family lost its patriarch. William Johnson, his paternal grandfather, passed away in April 2023 after a battle with colon cancer.

“Not being able to see him when he died, that was something that personally hit me but let me know that I had to keep going because something like that can make or break you,” Meechie Johnson said. “I made sure that it made me, because that’s what he would’ve wanted.”
