Someone with ties to Ohio told me the speculation was pretty strong that he is coming back here. For what it's worth, there is a staff reporter from a pay wall site that is saying multiple sources is telling him that Meechie will be coming back to the Gamecocks. Even if he's not playing point, he definitely upgrades our ability to bring the ball up the court. He was a streaky shooter for us, but showed the ability to finish at the rim. I do believe he was good enough to obtain 2nd team SEC for us. I firmly believe Coach knows the importance of this portal season, so if he's good with adding Meechie, I'm not going to second guess.
His grandfather must have taken a turn and passed and he probably wanted to do the right thing and be there toward the end. He did the responsible thing.Rip Pops
Paris leaned heavily on Johnson, and he grew into a double-digit scorer during both of his seasons with the program. Being away from home was tough, though, and while he was in South Carolina the Johnson family lost its patriarch. William Johnson, his paternal grandfather, passed away in April 2023 after a battle with colon cancer.
“Not being able to see him when he died, that was something that personally hit me but let me know that I had to keep going because something like that can make or break you,” Meechie Johnson said. “I made sure that it made me, because that’s what he would’ve wanted.”
This will be Kobe Knox’s third school. He started his career at Grand Canyon before transferring to South Florida. The 6-foot-5 guard appeared in 63 games for the Bulls (55 starts) and averaged 10.8 points and 3.8 rebounds this season.
i will reiterate what I said on Sunday…This is a HUGE grab for Coach Paris and staff! A premier scorer, nationally known, and a guy who can give you easy double digits per game. He’s a score first guard, in my mind, but really does a good job of putting others in the right place for THEM
to score as well.
LOVE this get!!
And if the Meechie Johnson thing materializes, I’m not mad at that either.
The name I’m intrigued by is Kobe Knox from S. Florida. He’s another high octane scorer, which we REALLY need right now. Looks like Coach Paris is trying to build a team next year that will resemble the old Arkansas Razorback run and gun style team.
