“It felt like home,” Campbell said. “All the schools they impressed me, they tried everything they could recruting-wise. They all tried their best, but there was just something about South Carolina that felt like home. It was my gut feeling.”
Campbell said he will graduate early and jump right into the Gamecock program in January. And considering where he’s come from in the football world, he’s excited about the chance to play at home and in the SEC.
“Since I started high school football, Lugoff-Elgin wasn’t very good for six or seven years and in high school we came in and changed the culture,” he said. “That’s what they are looking for at South Carolina, for people to come in and do their best and change the culture around. That’s what I’ve always been a part of and that’s what I’ll continue to be a part of.”
Campbell grew up a Clemson fan and camped in front of Dabo Swinney and Robbie Caldwell Wednesday. The Tigers previously had talked to him about a grayshirt but that was not appealing. And yesterday when no offer came, that sealed his plans. A Clemson offer, however, would have given him something to think about.
“I really don’t know, I would have had to sit down and talk it over with my parents and family,” Campbell said. “It would have been between South Carolina and Clemson. I honestly think I still would have chosen South Carolina. Something about me was telling me that was the spot. It will feel good (to play against them). I’m ready to beat them.”
Campbell becomes the eighth commitment for the Gamecocks’ 2018 class and their fourth from the state.

USC Thursday landed the fourth offensive lineman commitment for the 2018 class in Wyatt Campbell (6-6 285) of Lugoff-Elgin. Campbell chose the Gamecocks over Virginia Tech and NC State. He was on the Gamecocks’ radar earlier in the spring but didn’t land his offer until working out for Will Muschamp and Eric Wolford at a camp session last week.“It felt like home,” Campbell said. “All the schools they impressed me, they tried everything they could recruting-wise.
