4-star DE Curtis Fann Jr. has lot of ‘love’ for Gamecocks

January 25, 2018

Four-star defensive end Curtis Fann Jr. was among the headlining guests at South Carolina last Saturday for junior day.

The 6-foot-3, 245-pound prospect from Emanuel County Institute (Twin City, Ga.) had a “great” experience in Columbia, which solidified South Carolina’s position among the three programs — Auburn, Clemson and Florida — that he named as his lead group in December:

“Everything was exactly how I thought it was going to be,” Fann said. “We were supposed to go to some meetings for the education part and everything, but I got there a little late. I looked at some of the business buildings, because that’s what I want to major in when I get in college. We looked at the stadium, went on some tours, talked to the coaches and just hung out.”

Muschamp, of course, spent plenty of time with Fann, who’s ranked as the No. 16 weakside defensive end in the Class of 2019, according to the 247Sports composite.

“He was just talking about [how] I have the opportunity to play. He told me about every stat since he’s been there; everything is going up, they’re improving,” Fann said. “They’re building something special and he wants me to come be a part of that and how much they need me there and everything.”

Conversations with defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson, defensive line coach Lance Thompson and offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon, who recruits Fann’s area, also highlighted the trip.

“Coach T-Rob, he’s always turned up,” Fann said. “He’s got a great attitude. They always have good defenses, everywhere he and Coach Muschamp have been. I feel real comfortable about him getting me to the next level.”

He added, “Coach Thompson is real smooth. In my opinion, he’s one of the best defensive line coaches out there. He keeps it real and then he produces. You can’t really go wrong with Coach Thompson.”

While Fann certainly appears to be trending toward the Gamecocks, he wasn’t ready to step out on a limb and call them the favorite.

“I don’t ever want to name a leader,” he said, “because with this recruiting stuff, anything can really happen, but they’re really, really high on my list, I will say that. I love South Carolina. There’s nothing that can really change about that. They were my first option. … That’s basically where I’m at now.”

For now, Fann has no plans to visit other schools. And he’s sticking to that list of four, which he dropped a little more than a month ago.

“There are a couple of other schools that are still hitting me up that haven’t offered me yet, but that’s pretty much where I’m looking right now,” Fann said.

Fann said that a decision regarding his finalists is expected “no later than the summertime, at the most.”

Several factors will be weighed in the meantime.

“My trust with the coaches and how I fit in on the defense and in the program,” Fann said. “The fans and the education of the school, too. … South Carolina has a great business program and that’s what I want to major in.”
