Josh Belk
Former 4 star Clemson defensive lineman Josh Belk tweeted Friday night he intends to spend the “remainder of his collegiate career” with the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Belk announced his transfer from the Clemson program on May 16th, with those close to him citing “family reasons” and a desire to be “closer to home”.
He grew up a South Carolina fan, about an hour north of Columbia, and attended Lewisville High, which made his early commitment and signing with Clemson a surprise.
Belk visited both USC and Georgia during his brief period on the open market, but his commitment announcement cited South Carolina’s “staff and players welcoming him into the program with open arms” allowing him to “play college football at the highest level of competition while being close to my family.”
Belk refuted claims by some that there was tampering by USC and insisted the Gamecocks did not contact him until after he had received his complete release from Clemson. He said last month once the Gamecocks got back involved, it was like he had never left them.
“It was like, the relationship hasn’t changed,” Belk said. “They still welcomed me in like it was the beginning of the recruiting process. Just talked to Coach Muschamp and he showed me the new facility they are building and told me about how I can help the team out and how good of a player I can be.”
Belk said he was flattered by Muschamp’s approach to him this time around.
“I was like coach, I appreciate ya’ll still being there for me, welcoming in, like nothing happened, like I didn’t take a different route.”
It is not immediately known which class he will count under, and when he will be eligible to play for the Gamecocks. But barring a change in the NCAA transfer rules, he will have to sit out the 2018 season as a redshirt and will have four years of eligibility remaining.
