4-star WR Josh Vann has close connection with Gamecocks assistant

Top WR target on South Carolina
No offense to South Carolina or Georgia, but 4-star wide receiver Josh Vann (Tucker, Ga.) wants to see some other schools.
This summer, he’ll visit Michigan and Michigan State. He also hopes to see Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Tennessee.
South Carolina, which hosted him earlier this year for junior day, made a good impression during his first-and-only trip to Columbia.
“When I got down there, we were watching the first day of spring practice. … Everything stood out, especially the dorm rooms. You can’t even say dorms; they’re like mini-houses,” Vann said. “It’s good food down there, when we ate. It’s just a good community. Got to visit a whole lot of academic stuff.”
Muschamp, he added, is a “good, young” coach.
“He knows how to connect with the players and [it’s] guaranteed that he’ll play you,” Vann said.
Just the mention of co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon makes him laugh. McClendon, who grew up in Atlanta, has forged as a strong relationship with Vann.
“You could talk to any player who’s getting recruited by ‘B-Mac’ and they’ll probably laugh,” Vann said. “He’ll try to get to know you and try to become close. He’s not like any other coach that just talks and tries to get you on the phone.
“He tells me that he’s been through the process. Doesn’t want to bother you too much. Just tries to get you on the phone every now and then. He just tries to connect with you in different ways possible.”
Vann has been to Georgia twice.
“The first time, it wasn’t a good day. It was rainy,” he said. “We just got to visit the academics and weight room. We stayed inside. The second, it was for the spring game. It was a good atmosphere there.”
He added, “Organized and good people. And just the atmosphere down there. By me going to that spring game, I got to know and feel how it was, and that was the spring game. I can imagine how a real game would be.”
Georgia wide receivers coach James Coley is “just like” McClendon.
“He doesn’t hit me up every day, but he tries to stay in touch,” Vann said. “It’s a good relationship.”
Offers out
Trajan Jeffcoat, the top defensive line performer at the EPT Showcase on Sunday, picked up offer No. 4 on Monday: Missouri.
Muschamp, whose son was working at quarterback in the Showcase, got an in-person look at Jeffcoat on Sunday. Jeffcoat (6-foot-3, 220 pounds) will attend Muschamp’s camp on June 3, which is the first date of the summer.
Appalachian State, Colorado State and East Carolina have offered. Arkansas is also expressing interest.
The Gamecocks are also well-aware of Jeffcoat’s teammate, 2019 running back Kendrell Flowers, who was named running back MVP at the Showcase.
Four-star tight end (Rivals) James Mitchell added an offer from South Carolina on Monday. The 6-4, 210-pound prospect from Big Stone Gap, Va., has a handful of ACC and SEC offers, including Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.
The Gamecocks also offered 2019 safety Brendan Gant (Kathleen, Fla.). A 4-star recruit who’s listed by 247Sports composite rankings as the No. 9 safety in the country, Gant’s offer sheet includes Florida and Florida State.
Frank Martin reportedly offered 2018 point guard Jalen Carey, the No. 80 overall prospect in the Class of 2018, according to 247Sports.
Kansas, Florida, Indiana, UConn and Miami have offered.
