5-star DE Xavier Thomas talks South Carolina at The Opening

Five-star defensive end Xavier Thomas says he’s firm with his commitment to Clemson, but the staff at South Carolina remains in contact.
During an interview with SEC Country at The Opening on Monday, Thomas said coach Will Muschamp and defensive line coach Lance Thompson are in contact about once a week.
Their message is simple.
“Just that they’re still there,” Thomas said. “It’s still early in the process. I don’t go to college until January. I kind of lay off on it, because I’m really solid on my commitment.
“They contact me, but I’ll just contact them back.”
With about six months to go before he graduates from IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.), Thomas said it’s unlikely that he will take another visit to South Carolina, the school he grew up cheering for in his hometown of Florence, S.C.
“I think returning for a visit would create a lot of ruckus that’s not necessary,” Thomas said. “So I probably won’t do that.”
The Gamecocks last hosted him on April 1 for the spring game. His commitment to the Tigers was announced couple of weeks later.
South Carolina quarterback commitment Dakereon Joyner, who Thomas counts as a friend, is also recruiting him.
“I tell Clemson fans all the time, they don’t have nothing to worry about,” Thomas said. “Dakereon, I’ve been close with him since my ninth grade year, so it’s all been fun with, so of course I’m going to tease him a little bit, but other than that, I’m not going to flip.”
Thomas tossed a friendly jab when pressed about Joyner’s push.
“He doesn’t want that. That’s why he’s trying to get me to come to USC,” Thomas said. “But, yeah, it’s going to be a good rivalry.”
