5-star WR enjoys junior day

January 20, 2018

Five-star wide receiver Jashawn Sheffield was among the prospects in Columbia for the first big South Carolina recruiting event of the year.

Sheffield (6-1, 178) was joined by his classmate from Frederica Academy (Saint Simon’s Island, Ga.), 2019 4-star athlete Jaylin Simpson and 3-star safety Jakeen Harris, who attends Benedictine Military School in Savannah, Ga.

For Sheffield, who also visited in the summer for a 7-on-7 tournament, his second trip to Columbia was a “great” experience.

“I got to have some 1-on-1 time with the coaches. I got to eat some good food. I got to bowl, just bond. It was good bonding time today. I really enjoyed it,” Sheffield said.

It was a similar sort of message from coach Will Muschamp, defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson and offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon.

“That they want me to come in and be great. … But they’re going to challenge me at all times. I like being challenged,” Sheffield said. “If you come here, you’re going to have a great future and you’re going to be a great person.”

Sheffield wants his future home to be strong, on and off the field. More specifically, he wants to find a strong business program.

“I kind of want to go to school for business. Any school that has a good football program and good business, I like it,” he said.

The No. 18 overall prospect in the Class of 2019, according to the 247Sports composite, shared a few thoughts on each of the three Gamecock coaches.

Muschamp: “He kept it 100. He didn’t bull stuff with me. He did none of that, none of it.”

Robinson: “Coach T-Rob is just funny. He’s funny. I just like Coach T-Rob. There’s just something about him I like. He’s a good dude.”

McClendon: “He’s a great guy. I know him, because of Warren [McClendon]. He comes to see at the school, so I always talk to Coach McClendon. He’s a great guy.”

South Carolina’s coaches are recruiting him as an athlete, but the choice is up to him, wide receiver or defensive back.

“It’s up in the air right now,” Sheffield said, when asked which side of the ball he prefers.

Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, Miami, Ohio State and Penn State are also in the mix.
