Alim McNeill likes pitch to make an impact at South Carolina

April 17, 2017

Four-star defensive tackle Alim McNeill wanted to visit South Carolina for its spring game for a simple reason.

“It was that they are an SEC school, really,” McNeill said. “I wanted to get to the spring game because they are an SEC team that has offered me. I knew about South Carolina, but I didn’t know much about it.”

With the desire to learn more, the 2018 Raleigh (N.C.) Sanderson prospect made his way to Columbia. The 6-foot-2, 272-pound McNeill left feeling like he had a great experience and was impressed by the atmosphere.

The highlight, though, came from meeting coach Will Muschamp and defensive line coach Lance Thompson. He called both “great guys” and said they stressed how successful he could be in the South Carolina defense, in which they said he could make an early impact.

“They stressed that a lot actually, saying that I could come in and be an impact player if I put the work in,” McNeill said. “They were saying I could be an impact player in my first couple years. That’s really good because it’s in the top conference in the country.”

McNeill also holds SEC offers from Kentucky, Tennessee and Florida, which he recently visited on a spring break trip. He also holds offers from Michigan, Florida State, Penn State and more.

While McNeill, the No. 238 player in the nation according to the 247sports composite rankings, was pleased with what he saw on his first trip to visit the Gamecocks, he wants to see more and is planning to visit again this summer.

“This summer when I come back, I’m going to do a tour of the facilities and all that,” McNeill said. “I want to learn more about it.”

McNeill plans to make a commitment in December. For now, he’s locked in on improving his speed for the upcoming season, while also playing baseball this spring.

“Just working on my hands and speed,” McNeill said. “I can get a lot faster and I am working on my hand placement and IQ of the game, knowing the game better and the situations. Really speed and IQ.”

Gamecocks out for Dorian Thompson-Robinson

2018 quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson recently cut down his list to a final 7 schools, including South Carolina. He made a visit to Columbia last week, but the Las Vegas Bishop Gorman standout trimmed his list down again, with a commitment coming in the near future between Michigan and UCLA after a weekend visit to Ann Arbor.

The 6-foot-2.5, 195-pound Thompson-Robinson is the No. 50 player in the nation and a 4-star recruit.

Lamarius Benson visits Gators

According to SEC Country’s Zach Abolverdi, South Carolina commit Lamarius Benson took a visit to Gainesville this past Saturday.

The 2018 Covington (Ga.) Eastside offensive lineman has been committed to South Carolina since early March. He visited in late February for a junior day, landing an offer and then committed within 3 weeks.

The 6-foot-3, 300-pound Benson doesn’t have an offer from Florida at this time.
