The Kansas State Series
South Carolina leads the overall series against Kansas State 2-1 with just one of those games coming in the Dawn Staley era after the teams met twice in the early 1980s.

The most recent meeting came in the second round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament (Mar. 20). The Gamecocks posted a commanding 73-47 victory at Colonial Life Arena.

Starting point guard Destanni Henderson will be questionable for tonight's game: she suffered an injury to her left leg, and played only 16 minutes in the Gamecock's last game versus NC AT, all in the 1st half, although she wasn't really needed against the overwhelmed opponent. She was seen on the bench wearing a full leg sleeve on her left leg. Head Coach Dawn Staley stated Henderson was "day to day", and that the senior was still participating in practices. Most comments on her injury was that it was in the thigh/groin area, like she took a knee or had a deep thigh bruise.

Staley stated that if Henderson was not good to go for tonight's game, Zia Cooke and Laeticia Amihere would platoon at PG, with also Eniya Russell seeing some time there possibly. Henderson's health is all the more paramount for this season, as her projected back-up freshman Raven Johnson was lost for the season or at minimal for the majority of the season, with a leg injury. So we're sort of right back where we started last season, with Henderson being the lone woman at the point with little reserve help. So if Destanni misses some substantial time from the season, that could throw a wrench in the works for contending for a championship.......

We still have Littleton, too.

I don't see any PT for Lele this year.  Is she still on the IRL?

Yep I think she suffered an achilles tendon injury. Most say those require somewhere around 9-10 months of healing. I think her projection is to return by the SEC schedule at the earliest, but she's been practicing and going through pre-game warm-up drills with the team.....

Gamecocks lead in a tight one 15-12 after the 1st quarter. Boston and Cardoso lead the way with 4 pts each, and Boston has 6 rebounds already. Amihere started in Henderson's place - she has 3 pts on 1-3 shooting plus a FT, and 5 rebounds already after only 1 period of play. She has 0 assists, 1 turnover, and 2 blocks....

Having Amihere in the starting lineup really makes the team a looong one. Boston, Amihere, and Saxton are a formidable front court (even though Amihere technically isn't in a frontcourt role here), and at one time in the 1st period Boston, Cardoso, and Amihere were all in the lineup on the court. As expected from this, thre Gamecocks are leading the rebounding 16-11 after one period.

This game features a match-up of top Centers in WCBB this season - our Boston against Kansas St.'s Ayoka Lee, a 6-5 Post. Thus far in the 1st qtr., Boston has 4 pts and 6 rebounds, to Lee's 5 pts and 3 boards.....

Gamecocks lead 30-17 at the half.

Boston is starting to step up her game in recent days. She leads the Gamecocks with 11 pts on 4-5 shooting, and 11 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks both on K-STate's Lee. Lee by the way leads the Wildcats with 6 pts, 3 boards, and 1 block but picked up 3 fouls in only 12 minutes of action. When she came out of the game, the Gamecocks' size started to dominate, and they went on a 11-0 run to close out the 1st half. The team already has 30 totaal rebounds, and out-rebounded K-State 30-16. They also have 9 blocks in just one half of action!

In keeping with the front-court dominance, Amihere and Cardoso each scored 6 pts, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks (!!) to follow Boston's lead.....

KState's top scorer Lee gets her 4th foul.
That's bad for K-State, as it seems with her out of the lineup no one can stop Boston and our other bigs from romping. Looks like we'll need to, tonight, with Henderson out and Cooke having a forgettable game. Those are 2 of our top 3 scorers, along with Boston. She's doing her part, but others will need to step up.

The Gamecocks are also shooting miserably at the FT tonight, despite getting all the fouls from K-State. They are 10-23 thus far.......

Amihere with another 3-ptr.!! She's having a strong junior season thus far from the 3-pt. line, after having a fantastic one as a freshman, then a goose-egg one as a sophomore. She only takes 1 attempt per game, but she's hitting a ton of them.....
