Brad Lawing headed to Florida

South Carolina defensive line coach Brad Lawing will accept a position at Florida under Will Muschamp on the defensive staff for the Gators.

Lawing flew to Gainesville, Fla., to meet with Muschamp and company and sources at both programs said the "deal is done".

Lawing is one of the longest-tenured assistants in modern Gamecock history. He worked at South Carolina from 1989-98 under head coaches Sparky Woods and Brad Scott before returning to Columbia in 2006 under current head coach Steve Spurrier.

He's a good guy and a good coach. That being said, whenever there is a weakness on a staff, it will be exploited by others, and if that weakness can be fixed, then I'm all for it. If Lawing had reached his limit here, and it appears as though he had, then it was time to go. If he was not pulling his weight in recruiting, then it was time to go. It's clear to me that on-field coaching is not a weakness of this staff, but closers on the recruiting trail seems to be, so hopefully this will be an opening where we can improve in that area.

Over the last two years, Brad did not recruit as well as he did when he was younger. I have heard it is a personal problem I think recruiting is Whammy's job. I expect Spurrier and Coach Ward might have a few ideas who they want. Brad has been a big part in our success. We owe him lots of respect. I am sad to see him go, but we continued to win after EJ left, so I expect us to rebound after this.
