6-6 Michael Carrera of Venezuela announced Friday on Twitter that he has made the grades to enroll at USC. Carrera visited USC in early July and actually said at that time he planned to go to USC. But he had to finish up some academic work at his school in Maryland. He also got a hard recruiting push from some other schools, most notably Memphis and Pittsburgh. But his initial feelings about USC held firm. “That’s the place I want to be,” Carrera said Friday night as he was making his way to Columbia with his father and one of his coaches. “Pitt and Memphis wanted me real bad. But from the first time I’m there (at USC) I say to myself, this is the place I want to be. Coach Frank (Martin) and his assistants are really good. Coach Frank is Cuban and that makes a connection right there.

I like everything about South Carolina.” Carrera averaged 13 points and 12 rebounds per game last season. He gives the Gamecocks six in the 2012 class, but three are still in limbo. 6-2 LaShay Page, who is transferring from Southern Miss, is awaiting an SEC ruling on his waiver appeal for immediate eligibility. And 6-5 Thaddeus Hall and 6-1 Tariq Phillip are waiting on NCAA Clearinghouse approval. link: http://www.goupstate.com/article/20120817/PSPORTS02/120819647/-1/PSPORTS
