Coaches forging strong relationships
Four-star linebacker Kalen Deloach has been a busy man this spring, taking visits to several SEC schools, including South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and Auburn. Clemson and Ohio State have played host this spring to the 6-foot, 201-pound prospect from Islands High School in Savannah, Ga.
He’ll return to Columbia on Saturday for the Garnet and Black spring game. Last Sunday, at The Opening Atlanta regional at Buford (Ga.) High School, Deloach told SEC Country that he planned to visit Florida State the next day.
All the schools have offered Deloach, who landed an invite to The Opening finals in Dallas. Of the five 247Sports Crystal Ball picks that have been issued, South Carolina has four of them, but that’s no guarantee he’ll end up with the Gamecocks.
“I just want to put myself at a place where I can get better every day, get to the next level,” Deloach said.
Muschamp and South Carolina linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler recognized Deloach’s talent before any other Power-5 program when they issued the Gamecocks offer in September.
“It was an amazing experience, because I didn’t expect an SEC school to offer me first and I see that all my hard work is starting to pay off, when they offered me,” Deloach said.
The two coaches have already made a good impression.
“He’s a good coach,” Deloach said of Muschamp. “I could see myself — he coaches up his player. He interacts in practice. He’s a good head coach and he just came off a good season for his [second] year there.”
When asked about Hutzler, Deloach said, “We text every day. We call. He talks to my dad every day. He recruits the whole family. That’s what I like about him.”
One more SEC offer
Junior college defensive tackle Jahkeem Green, who committed to South Carolina on Saturday, tweeted out his offers on Thursday. As it turns out, South Carolina and Louisiana-Lafayette aren’t his only two.
Florida has also offered the 2019 prospect from Highland Community College, by way of Sumer (S.C.) High School.
Green (6-foot-4, 305) is one of three defensive linemen committed to the Gamecocks’ 2019 haul.
