Will Muschamp already has made one sartorial adjustment as South Carolina’s head coach, but he’s not ready to say yet if it will be the first or the last.
The Gamecocks have practiced in garnet helmets this spring, a departure from the traditional white practice helmets of the Steve Spurrier era. The new practice helmets also have a slight adjustment from the team’s previous garnet headgear. The current practice helmets have eliminated the white circle that used to serve as a backdrop for the block-C logo on the sides.
Spurrier was a uniform traditionalist in season as well, and the Gamecocks rarely wore anything beyond their standard home and away uniform combinations during his 10-plus years as head coach. Interim head coach Shawn Elliott shook things up during his six games at the helm, putting the team in three different helmets for those games.
Which way Muschamp’s Gamecocks will lean has yet to be seen.
“You’ll see it in the fall,” Muschamp said. “I’m going to talk to the seniors. I want them to have some input in that. They have a lot better imagination than I do.”
Senior cornerback Rico McWilliams hasn’t given any thought to the team’s uniforms, he said.
“We got to win before we do all that,” McWilliams said.
