Redshirt freshman Javon Charleston is back on the move. Charleston moved from wide receiver to safety midway through fall camp to give South Carolina some help in the secondary, a position thin in depth that head coach Will Muschamp believed he could help. Now, ahead of Saturday's game against Texas A&M, Charleston is moving back to the offensive side of the ball.
Charleston, a walk-on, was impressive to the new coaching staff in spring practice. He caught four passes for 54 yards in the spring game, which helped him be named a second-team wide receiver on the post-spring depth chart.
This fall, the staff felt like there were enough players at the wide receiver position, especially young talent, so they put him at a safety position where they were looking for answers. The staff praised Charleston's abilities on defense, but he's played minimally except on special teams.
With injuries to Deebo Samuel and Randrecous Davis, the Gamecocks need a little bit of help at wide receiver. Only four wide receivers saw action in last Saturday's 17-10 loss to Kentucky.
