Are you kidding me? National pundits are debating whether a Carolina player is simply too good and should sue to get in the NFL early ... and this is a bad thing? This is a GREAT thing. I hope they debate it every night for the next six months. You can't buy this kind of publicity. The talking heads at ESPN can say anything they want as long as the Gamecock logo is on the screen while they're doing it.

There are multiple reasons why many of us are upset about the publicity. The more traction this story gets, and the more folks that Clowney hears suggesting he should sit out to avoid losing big NFL dollars due to injury, the possibility increases that the following things could happen:

  • Clowney gets an insurance policy and must pay an expensive premium that requires some type of assistance from someone other than his family.
  • Unscrupulous agents swarm to Columbia to leverage all of this talk about losing money due to injury and increase the pressures and incentives for Clowney to sign with an agent early and "protect" his future.
  • This whole media circus around our program causes an unwanted and unneeded amount of distractions to Clowney, other players, and coaches. (Spurrier has already been asked about this in an interview with AJC which was supposed to focus on NSD and his responses drew a national rebuke from a complete moron on ESPN. Also, the coaches are going to need to step up their efforts to remindplayers that contact with agents can get the player disqualified and the program put on probation)
  • Clowney hears this ridiculous notion enough that he starts to believe it is the thing to do.
I think at this point Clowney is laughing about all of this attention and the sheer absurdness of the notion that he would sit out a year to prepare for the draft in fear that he would get injured. However, this could end up with Clowney unknowingly doing something that would be against one of the many ridiculous rules that the NCAA has put into place. All of this attention brings more slimy agents around and could end up hurting our program in the long run. The bottom line is this. Clempson fans are loving the fact that a multitude of people are suggesting that Clowney hang it up and never play another down for the Gamecocks. That is all you need to know about this story.

However, Clowney has handled this situation remarkable well to this point. Showing that he loves the game of football and being a South Carolina Gamecock!

They will make a movie after his story soon
