Coach Beamer saying all the right things

For never being a head coach he has handled himself over the mick very professional. Sounded the more I hear the better I feel he can handle the task ahead. Below are some key notes from Beamers news conference.

Beamer said love within a program, gratitude, trust, high energy are characteristics he plans for his program.  A program that plays with great joy and passion.

Beamer points out he is very detailed oriented, no detail is too small to be addressed in every aspect of the program.

Beamer said he doesn't see obstacles in his way at USC, he sees nothing but great expectations.

Beamer:  Said if Gamecocks are able to go to a bowl, that would be good for him to be able to observe and watch the players, though he wouldn't coach them in a bowl, it would be an extra spring practice, and looks forward to getting after it with Clemson again.

Beamer said he's met with every coach on the staff and is going thru that process, some great coaches on the staff, there are some on the staff he envisions being on the staff, going to take his time on that.

Beamer:  Offensive system has to be flexible enough to adjust to the personnel you have.  He's watched the #Gamecocks play a lot on TV this season, so he has a good idea of the players and what they do well.  Have to be able to run and pass, be physical, explosive.

Beamer tells Gamecock fans and alums he will work tirelessly to get the Gamecocks back to Atlanta, and he will have a program that will make them proud on and off the field.

Beamer:  Will have a lot of fun building what he wants to be the premier culture in college football.  Said the deal was completed late Saturday night after his game with Baylor.

Beamer:  He's always recruited the South Carolina area and region, so he doesn't feel like a stranger with the high schools in the state.

Beamer:  Has had opportunity to be a head coach other places but didn't want to leave where he was just to check that box, but USC has everything you need to be a winner.

This is the fifth introductory presser for our HC, starting with Fat Brad and now up to Shane, that I have watched. Each one said the right things about why they wanted the job. But none are close to Shane - and this is from a guy who has been absolutely down on his hire from the moment his name was mentioned - in terms of a no-doubt-about-it passion for USC as the place he wanted to be.

I was very impressed.

I posted this in chat box say here to

I see now why he was picked. Beamer was very impressive today. Said what all Gamecocks want to hear. Very good speaker no hesitation on Que. I see why he did so well in his interviews.

I like how he handled Phil.  Picked up him for asking 3 questions and then called Clemson that team in the upstate after Phil has to work them into his question.  Muschamp totally nailed it when he called him tiger Phil.  I thought the press really seems to like and respect him and that he has a good relationship with most of them.    I thought he did a very nice job showing the passion he has for this school and the job.

You kinda know the guy wants to be here when he never brings up how much he wants to make.  Only talked about what the pool was for his coordinators.

Ray's comments at the end were very interesting too: the one that made the most impact on me was how Ray thought Shane has what he called "an edge," an intangiable quality that he feels puts him atop most other people.

Not a Ray fan as and AD here, but if this young man proves is brass and wins here. Will have to tip my Gamecock visor to Tanner well done Ray.

Some of the talk several years ago was that things went South for Spurrier when Steve, Jr., took over the recruiting reigns from Shane.  Some said that is what caused him to leave the program.

I have felt for a while we needed him back in the program in some capacity.  HC will do, I reckon.

It's safe to say that the Sooners have made beating Clemson their goal the past few years, so there's that.

I think his former players who are in the NFL now will create a recruiting buzz and gravitas for him here and the wins will come sooner than people think.

As a Gamecock fan for over 60 years, I am excited about this young man. Our battle cry has always been "just wait 'till next year". We have to remember that since the 50s only four coaches have left with winning records: Giese, Carlin, Morrison and Spurrier. It's going to be a huge challenge for Coach Beamer. However, I think he will be successful but it's not going to happen overnight. Recruiting is the key today and we're not going to to beat out Alabama, Florida and Georgia for top talent immediately. We're going to have to get good three stars and coach them up to the SEC level. It's certainly doable. I just hope I can hang around on this side of the grass long enough to see it happen.

Gave you a thumbs up, Let me add Clemson on the recruiting thing.

We do have some talent right now and there are plenty of good players in NC, SC and Georgia that want to play for the Gamecocks. It is very interesting that many of the players that participated in those three 11 win seasons were recruited by Beamer. Maybe it's a coincidence that the talent level seemed to decline somewhat after he  and Ellis Johnson departed, but I don't believe in coincidences.

Yeah, he's a little bit different in a good way.  The lights are on.  He gets it.

Ray always seems uncomfortable in pressers like he's afraid of saying something wrong, but he loosened up toward the end after Shane had clearly won over the room.

His former players will always say he's a competitive person on game day, but you get the feeling that Tanner has had to bury that part of him to protect his coaches up until now.

You could see the competitive fire in Tanner's eyes at a certain point, especially when he started talking about Beamer's emphasis on staffing instead of himself.

There seem to be two rules of thumb with head coaches:

1)  They are making enough that they should know how to solve problems on their own and shouldn't be given help if it's needed.  The reverse of the same coaches not wanting or asking for help because of their own egos is also true.

2)  We have a substantial investment of the a coach and should provide help if he or she asks for it because a replacement would be a lot more expensive.  A coach shouldn't be afraid to ask for help for the same reason.

I think it's fair to say most people will like Shane and want to help him if needs and/or asks for it.  For the same reason, he won't have trouble finding good players or coaches because they will gravitate toward him in the same way.  He will get this thing turned around faster than most people think.

I can't remember the exact words but I like that he said we have to push or maybe attack on defense. Maybe we've seen the last of sitting back waiting on teams to score on us.

I think many people have started to think you can't win here anymore.

He said that people may say you can't win here, but he believes and knows from experience that you can, indeed, win here.

I am sure that comment went a long way in the interview.

I have a article I written today where he talks offense and defense. Will post the article tomorrow on what he wants out of his defense and offense saving it for Tuesday.. I have those quotes in the article.

One thing that jumped out at me yesterday I think shows me that he wanted to be here one day when he was planning 10 years ago.  He said he told his wife if he ever wanted to come back here as a head coach they needed to leave and go to VT.  I think that he realized that wheels were coming up the Spurrier bus.  When you have a 5* on campus and Spurrier does not even know who he is, the writing is on the wall.   Beamer probably realized he needed to leave while things were at their peak and he would not be tainted by the last years of Spurrier's coaching.  He strategically attached himself to the best years the program has ever seen and got out before it went south.  He may may a hell of a hedge fund manager if coaching does not work out lol.  To have that kind of long term picture tells me he is a smart guy and hopefully he makes good strategic decisions with our program.
