Coach Beamer saying all the right things

One thing that jumped out at me yesterday I think shows me that he wanted to be here one day when he was planning 10 years ago.  He said he told his wife if he ever wanted to come back here as a head coach they needed to leave and go to VT.  I think that he realized that wheels were coming up the Spurrier bus.  When you have a 5* on campus and Spurrier does not even know who he is, the writing is on the wall.   Beamer probably realized he needed to leave while things were at their peak and he would not be tainted by the last years of Spurrier's coaching.  He strategically attached himself to the best years the program has ever seen and got out before it went south.  He may may a hell of a hedge fund manager if coaching does not work out lol.  To have that kind of long term picture tells me he is a smart guy and hopefully he makes good strategic decisions with our program.
You're probably right, but his dad was also struggling at VT as well at that time and it probably didn't take much to convince Shane to come help out dear ole dad.

I am on the record as being a Napier guy and believed he would have been the best choice to take over here at South Carolina...until yesterday...after watching that presser and getting to hear Shane speak and answer questions for a little over an hour I am now convinced there may have been no other coach in the country...regardless of resume...better suited to take over at South Carolina. That dude is SPECIAL.

There is a reason so many of the former players were so high on him. Why so many top tier coaches and programs pursued and hired him. That guy was born to be a football coach. The stories of him practicing how to carry the cable for his dad or of him sitting on his deck with a pair of Fischer-Price head phones calling plays down to his sister after recruiting the neighborhood kids into letting him play 'head coach from the press box' are amazing.

I could go on but I almost felt an obligation to come on here and admit how wrong I was. Again...there are a lot of great football coaches out there and I still believe Billy Napier is a future star but I honestly believe that on some cosmic level Shane Beamer may have been born to be the Gamecock head coach at exactly this moment in time. We need to be patient...he needs to get his staff in place...which is going to be absolutely elite...and we need to deal with the fact that we play football in the toughest conference on the planet...we aren't going to win the SEC next year...but Shane Beamer could very well be the USC coach for the next 15-20 years...and I have never felt that on any level over the last 50 plus years as nothing but Gamecock!

Well said and to be honest you did a pretty good sales job on Napier and had me leaning that way after looking into him myself, but it started to feel like Napier was more of a gun for hire type that would not be totally invested.  I was also high on Chadwell, but after hearing the passion and the always knowing he wanted to come back here one day and the steps he took to make that happen sold me as well.  Let's GO!

Yes, well said I agree I was almost ready to wait Saturday night to make an hire, I was starting lean more toward Chadwell, some of the post almost  had me convinced, but when I listened to the press conference, and read some articles again I knew that U.S.C. had made the right choice , I think he will right the ship and who knows we just might be able to compete next year for the SEC, with all the guys transferring these days anything is possible with the right coach, and  I believe his is right for South Carolina.  GO COCKS  ! Get ready is going to be an great ride.

I had to make the same sort of mea culpa. Two weeks ago I was on the "Anybody But Shane Train," and now feel like I'm his biggest cheerleader. A big part of my argument started to lose mental steam in my mind when I realized that never being an OC or a DC didn't have to matter - as long as he could bring people in he trusts to do those jobs. We know he can recruit, and we know recruiting, along with the systems put in place by the coordinators he chooses,  will be the biggest factor about pulling up and away from a two-win season and a pretty bare cupboard.

Props, for putting that out there.

Now, just for curiosity sake, it will be interesting to watch Napier over the next couple of years -- he obviously wants a big time P5 program, but then so did Herman.

Wasn't Napier the one who was worried about Tanner not being around much longer?  That may have been just a rumor, I dunno.

Good question, I remember that concern being out there also, but can't remember to whom it was tied.  Although honestly, it should have been some level of concern to everyone on the interested end of the search.  Having Caslen involved in the process probably helps mitigate that concern a little.
