Coach Justin Stepp breaks down Gamecocks wide receiver signees
Dec. 21, 2022The early signing period started Wednesday and runs through Friday, with USC expected to have more than 20 players sign over the next three days. Carolina will have spots to fill at receiver with the losses of Jalen Brooks and Josh Vann. Dakereon Joyner could return for a final season with the Gamecocks but has not decided yet on his future plans.
Here’s what Stepp had to say about the three-receiver signees who were added Wednesday morning. (The Gamecocks have a commitment from Vicari Swain, who could play receiver or defensive back in college.)
TYSHAWN RUSSELL
The three-star prospect from Pennsylvania was a late addition to the class after he committed Sunday. Russell finished his senior season with 61 catches for 1,334 yards and 22 touchdowns while helping the squad to a state championship earlier this month.
Stepp on Twitter: “Welcome HOME @TyShawnR_22! Big-time playmaker with home run speed! Can’t wait to see you making plays in Willy B! ... 4 TD’s in your State Championship Game… Gamecock fans ain’t seen nothing yet. Can’t wait to see you doing that in Willy B.”
KELTON HENDERSON
The Florida native played receiver and defensive back in high school but will play receiver at USC. He is a three-star prospect and was picked to play in the Under Armour All-American Game. ▪ Stepp on Twitter: “Welcome Home @KeltonH5 ! Kelton Is a freak athlete. A tough dynamic playmaker! Let's go make plays Kelt! ... Pumped to have @KeltonH5 officially part of the family! Let’s go get it.”
CJ ADAMS
The 6-foot-3 Georgia native started out his career at quarterback and also played in the secondary before switching the receiver during his junior year. Adams also is a standout basketball player. Stepp on Twitter: “Welcome HOME @CJAdams0! Can’t wait to Coach you! A physical big play guy!!! Let’s go make plays! ... Can’t wait to have you here @CJAdams0 let’s go get this work!!!” Stepp said.
