Co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper was spotted near Charleston, S.C., on Friday night, checking out 4-star quarterback commitment Dakereon Joyner.
Muschamp also was in the Charleston area on Friday. Before going to watch his son’s high school team play — more on that squad in a second — Muschamp went by Oceanside Collegiate Academy in Mount Pleasant.
Oceanside’s coach, Chad Grier, is the father of West Virginia quarterback Will Grier, who signed to play for Muschamp at Florida. Grier’s starting quarterback at Oceanside, Sam Hartman, is a 2018 prospect who’s committed to Wake Forest.
Jackson Muschamp, the coach’s oldest son, plays for Hammond School, which won at Pinewood Prep on Friday. The younger Muschamp is teammates with a pair of 2020 defensive linemen with offers from South Carolina: end Jordan Burch and tackle Alex Huntley.
Burch, who played at Wilson High School in Florence before transferring to Hammond, might be the top in-state prospect for the 2020 cycle.
Big weekend in Blacksburg
It’s been written on multiple occasions in this space: Virginia Tech is one of South Carolina’s primary competitors on the recruiting trail.
On Saturday, the Hokies entertained several 2018 prospects who are high on the Gamecocks priority list: 4-star defensive tackle Rick Sandidge (Concord, N.C.), 4-star linebacker Dax Hollifield (Shelby, N.C.) and 5-star defensive end K.J. Henry (Clemmons, N.C.)
Sandidge was there as an unofficial visitor. Hollifield and Henry were there on official visits. Virginia Tech routed North Carolina, 59-7.
South Carolina has hosted Sandidge and Hollifield for games this season. Hollifield has been to Columbia twice, once unofficially and again officially.
There’s no word yet on when Henry will take his official visit to South Carolina — the same could be said for Sandidge, though Henry is expected to make his at some point over the next couple of months. Up next for Henry is his official visit to Clemson next weekend.
Weekend roundup
On Saturday, 2019 4-star running back Cesare Mellusi (Naples, Fla.) tweeted about his offer from South Carolina. He’s ranked by the 247Sports composite as the No. 15 running back in the Class of 2019
