The AP Poll takes up most of the oxygen in the preseason rankings room, but the Coaches Poll has its own place as it helps set the expectations and tone for the season.
Usually the top teams in both preseason polls are about the same - or close to the pin - but to generalize, the coaches tend to like the teams with the superstar quarterbacks and more settled coaching situations, while the AP voters occasionally get a tad more quirky.
Last year the AP had Arkansas (19) and Kentucky (20) ranked a bit higher than the Coaches Poll did - 23 and 21, respectively. The AP ranked BYU, the coaches didn't. The coaches put Texas at 18, the AP didn't have it ranked.
To note, this is NOT the actual 2023 Preseason Coaches Poll – it’s our prediction and projection of what it might be when the real one comes out in August. It’s our call based on historical precedent, returning talent, and guessing how the coaches are perceiving the top teams and big brand names.
