(Coaching search update for December 1st)

(Coaching search update for December 1st)

We’re looking for the search to come to a head this weekend. Going into the week sources told us Ray Tanner plans to meet in person with Steve Sarkisian, Brian Johnson, Scott Satterfield and Billy Napier. Satterfield is the only one who doesn’t have a game this week. It looks like Napier will get the final interview. His Louisiana team is playing at Appalachian State Friday night, and a source said Monday Napier would not meet with Tanner any earlier than Saturday. The two already have conducted a phone interview. Napier does not plan to hang around the Carolinas after the game, so the meeting could take place in Louisiana, or perhaps in the Atlanta area were some interviews last week were held.. Tanner is eying the weekend to complete his interviews so that he can present his choice to the university president and the board chairman, so it stands to reason Napier will be the last candidate to meet with him.
I soooo hope Napier gets the job.  Everything I'm hearing says that it's Shane Beamer and they will announce it Monday.

Honestly, I don’t understand the support Shane Beamer has for the job. The comparisons to Dabo are laughable. The fact that Dabo has never been a coordinator is the exception, not the rule. Dabo did not win at a high level until Venables came aboard along with an incredible QB in Watson. Venables is unique in that he is happy being a coordinator. Most Coordinators have ambitions to become head coaches which makes it hard to keep them. Saban is the only coach I know of that can replace coordinators every year without skipping a beat. That’s why I don’t think the CEO concept works. Beamer was not known for his work ethic during his short stay on Kirby’s staff. He reminds me more of Ray Goff than Dabo.

This is an excellent statement, and it is true.  People act like Dabo is a once in a lifetime thing.  It's not complicated, in my opinion.  He's a doofus, and I think we can all agree on that.  He was about to get fired, and the administration spent a buttload to get good coordinators.  Dabo is not an incredible coach, but he is great at the CEO role. He lets people do their jobs, and he spends his time building the brand and recruiting.  He has the perfect situation, in that he's in a small town, and he is god in Clemson, and gets anything he wants, and he and his coaches have no real reason to leave.  He has built the concept of family (insert incest joke here), and people like to belong.  I don't think it would be hard to duplicate, IF you can find the right coordinators.  A high-powered, fun offense is absolutely mandatory to draw in the electric type recruits needed.  Clemson has the advantage in that they get to practice all season before they play meaningful games. We don't have that advantage, but we can do the other things.  I think this would work with Beamer, but I'm good with Napier or Chadwell.  All of the rest of the candidates, not so much.  We should be able to have a winning season in the first season with a new coach, and go up from there.

Also, when Dabs was about to get fired, he brought in a stellar recruiting class (2011), with three out of state 5* players - coming off a 6-7 season that included a loss to South Florida in their bowl game. I do not think that they are cheating on a large scale now, but that was mighty suspicious back then - and helped to launch their run.

The other move that people point to as a reason for their success is getting rid of the Offensive Coordinator - one Billy Napier - and bringing in the Chad, who only had one season of college experience (OC at Tulsa). The Chad is the one that installed the high octane offense and brought in Deshaun Watson - and they were off to the races.
That is true, but Napier's offense set a record at Clemson at that time.  That's why I feel that with a really good offensive scheme, anyone could duplicate it to a certain extent.

That's one of the reasons I am sort of meh on the Beamer candidacy ... he would rely on someone else to bring that, which is concerning to me. Doesn't mean it couldn't happen, but still concerning.

The Dabo comparison is laughable.  I don't like the guy, but has made outstanding hires, especially Venables, but also the OC's.  He's relentless recruiter too.
Nobody really talks about it, but Clemson hiring Brad Scott after his stint here was a big part of Clemson's success with Tommy Bowden and then Dabo.

Brad was not cut out to be a HC, but ended up flourishing at Clemson because of the ties he had built in SC during his time at USC.

So I ventured over to one of those pay sites a few minutes ago to glean any additional info on the coaching search and more or less the same info we have over here.  I am cutting and pasting the following post of a Dawg fan that makes complete sense to me and kind of my sentiments although not quite as negative about Beamer, but do agree, Napier should be the guy:

Napier would be a homerun for USC. As a UGA fan, he would be the coach I would fear the most that you have a reasonable shot at hiring. He is a relentless recruiter and a solid offensive coach. His teams play tough and are not scared against more talented opponents.Honestly, I don’t understand the support Shane Beamer has for the job. The comparisons to Dabo are laughable. Richt was very casual about discipline and details, and Bobo deserves a ton of credit for making sure things got done correctly. Bobo is also a strong positive culture influence despite the few accusations of malcontents at CSU. Most UGA fans would love to have him back in some capacity which may be possible with McGarrity stepping down. (Bobo hates McGarrity for good reason) .I don’t think Freeze, Campbell, or Sarkisian would be interested at all. I would take a chance on Chadwell before Beamer. Good luck on the conclusion of your search.
I'm clearly bias but most people outside the program believe Napier is a near home run hire and right on schedule for possibly THE hottest young coach in the country to take the obvious next step at Carolina.

Napier has been in the discussion at every opening in the SEC over the last two years but he stayed with his team to finish building something special at UL...his first class at ULa-La have won three straight division championships...set every offensive/scoring record the school had...have the most wins...in a season and during their time there...multiple bowl games...nationally ranked two years straight...the only thing they haven't done is win the Sunbelt...App State and Coastal are real teams...he does that this year and its hard to do a better job than he has...as the head coach...running the entire operation...calling plays and coaching QB's...dude is legit/special...and he is a better man than he is a coach...Shane is a good guy as well...Napier is simply the better choice/coach.

Fun Facts: UL lost the 2018 Sunbelt Championship game to a ranked App State squad whose coach left after that game to take the Head Coach job at Louisville in the ACC...UL lost the 2019 Sunbelt Championship game to a ranked App State squad whose coach left after that game to take the Head Coach job at Missouri in the SEC...UL plays App State this Friday and is in the 2020 Sunbelt Championship game again this year playing Coastal...

Absolutely correct!!!

I'm optimistic because Billy is doing a 2nd interview. Seems if you're not interested, you don't interview 2X. I really can't see how Caslen picks Shane over Billy if both would accept.

I would prefer Napier over Beamer.  I just think the experience of Napier is something we need.  If Beamer is hired, he must hire a very good staff around him.  Napier needs a good staff as well, but has HC experience.
