South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said Wednesday that he's unsure if starting quarterback Connor Shaw will be able to play Saturday against UAB.
Shaw has a bruised right (throwing) shoulder and didn't play last week in the 48-10 win against East Carolina. Spurrier said Shaw would try to throw a little bit in Wednesday's practice and then try to go "full go" in Thursday's practice.
"If he can throw it down the field without any pain, then he'll start Saturday night," Spurrier said. "If he can't throw anything but screen passes, I think we've got to let the other guy play."
That other guy is sophomore Dylan Thompson, who stepped in last week and passed for 333 yards and three touchdowns.
If Shaw can't play, Spurrier said senior Seth Strickland would be the Gamecocks' backup quarterback if something happened to Thompson.
