Could the Gamecocks add another South Florida standout?

April 30, 2018

At lunch one day in the St. Thomas Aquinas High School (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) cafeteria, 3-star center Vincent Murphy promised 3-star linebacker Jahmar Brown they would be teammates in college.

The 6-foot, 192-pound Brown laughed off the idea, but Murphy — now a South Carolina commit — was dead serious.

The 2019 prospects were both on campus last month for the Gamecocks’ spring game. It was Brown’s first trip to South Carolina.

“Vinny, he really pushes for me to come to South Carolina,” Brown said. “When he first went up there, he fell in love with it. He told me that I would fall in love with it. He wasn’t lying about that, either.

“But outside of [linebackers] Coach [Coleman] Hutzler, Vinny is my main recruiter to South Carolina.”

Brown, the No. 43-ranked outside linebacker in the country, according to the 247Sports composite, enjoyed the visit.

“The main thing I remember is just meeting the coaches, me just falling in love with the city, me building a relationship with Coach [Will] Muschamp, Coach Hutzler and [defensive coordinator Travaris] Robinson, and the food was good.”

The visit began on Friday and lasted through the spring game on Saturday afternoon.

“[Muschamp] was really just telling me to keep my grades up, keep getting after it. … They really want to see how I can finish out in the classroom,” Brown said.

Like Brown, Robinson is originally from the Miami area.

“Coach T-Rob is a pretty interesting person,” Brown said. “I like Coach T-Rob. I don’t know, it’s just easy for me to relate to him. He’s a real relatable coach. That’s really my take from Coach T-Rob.”

Hutzler, his lead recruiter, has certainly made a strong impression.

“So far, me and Coach Hutzler have been talking since last September, last October. Honestly, me saying this, I honestly feel like he’s not told me one lie,” Brown said. “I feel like he’s been absolutely truthful with me. That’s what I like about Coach Hutzler, he’s a genuine person.”

Miami, Stanford, Ohio State and Oklahoma are also in the mix. He’ll visit Stanford on May 11. A return to South Carolina is in the works for the first week in June. Brown has yet to visit Ohio State and Oklahoma, but he’s considering both as official visit destinations.

A decision will be made at some point this summer.

“Who offers me the best education? As well as how well do I fit into the school? The atmosphere, those are the main things,” Brown said of the things that matter most to him during the decision-making process. “How can they help me develop as a player?”

Given the proximity to home, some might assume that Miami is favorite.

“Miami is pretty high on me, but I wouldn’t say that’s an advantage,” Brown said. “Everyone is pretty even right now — I can say that. Everybody is really even. Just waiting on Stanford. Waiting, if I plan to make any other visits, between the timeframe of now and July, to see who wows me.”
