The Curtiss XP-46, the successor to the P-40 Warhawk. Curtiss instead made improvements to the Warhawk, and the P-46 was never put into production.

USS Phoenix (CL-46), was a light cruiser of the Brooklyn-class cruiser family. She was the third Phoenix of the United States Navy. After World War II the ship was transferred to Argentina in 1951 and was ultimately renamed General Belgrano in 1956.  General Belgrano was sunk during the Falklands War in 1982 by the British nuclear-powered submarine HMS Conqueror, the only ship to have been sunk in combat by a nuclear-powered submarine during wartime.

USS Iwo Jima, CV-46.

CV-46_Iwo_Jima.jpg

USS Iwo Jima (CV-46) was a planned Essex-class aircraft carrier for the United States Navy. Newport News Shipbuilding began construction of the vessel in early 1945, but on August 12, with the end of World War II, the Navy cancelled the contract.  She remained in an unfinished state until 1949, when her hull was scrapped in the slipway in Newport News before ever being launched.

Never launched or commissioned, but the skill required to build modern ships just amazes me.
