Current feeling about season's potential

Wanted to ask what everyone's thoughts/feelings are this week about the rest of the season.

Before the season started, I thought we were most likely a 7-5 team given the schedule and anticipating some small incremental improvement.

The UNC game killed any optimism that might have informed that pre-season prediction.

Then the CSU game happened and while it piqued my interest, didn't erase the impressions from week 1 (despite a great showing form Ryan).

The Alabama game was more like what I expected a month ago - still blown out, but not an embarrassing showing.

So now I'm back to feeling the way I did pre-season; that we're a 7-5 team.

EXCEPT we lost to one of the wins I was anticipating in UNC. So now I'm down to 6-6. We'll see what Saturday brings. Hoping I can revise my expectations upwards after a blowout win. Lose, and I'm right back to where I was after UNC (with another loss to an anticipated win).

Well, we will only face one more team this year with as good or better talent that Bama.  Our offense needs to keep rolling and find a way to score in the RZ.  I think we can win or compete with everyone else on the schedule aside from Clemson if that happens.   Our defense is still slow, soft and weak in key areas but it won’t be as glaring until the level of competition rises.  6 or 7 wins is still likely.   Mizzou and UK are now must win games - Obviously we want to win them all.

I like the new mentality...a good team with developing chemistry, desperate to win. The desperados. Every game is a must win. It all starts Saturday. A win in Columbia Missouri and we could develop into a very good team. Desperate for win every week a must win game. One win at a time starts Saturday.

Go Desperados

Every game is a must win for sure! I had us going 10-2 I think (losing to Bama and UGA) before the season. I’m still holding onto 8-4 at the worst but hoping for 9-3 (still don’t see us beating UGA)

Felt gosh awful after the loss to NC.  Jake Bentley goes down and I felt even worse the next day.  Ryan Hillinski has stepped up and has surpassed my expectations of him as a freshman QB.  If our defense learns to tackle better and secondary steps it up a whole lot more, I believe we can be 7-5 still, but we cannot take a weekend off against anyone.  This team has to learn how to win games against teams that nobody gives them a chance to beat.  Hopefully, after playing against Alabama these players know that they can play with the best of them and win games if we don't make a lot of mistakes.  My heart wanted a great season this year, but my head tells me that a 7-5 record may be our best hope.  Just go out and play hard each game no matter who the opponent is and give it 150% and maybe the "ball will bounce our way"!!!

Don’t get me wrong, I wanted to go 12-0 this season (like every season) but most pundits/analysts had us going 6-6 at the very best and most of those had us winning maybe 5 games. From that perspective 7-5 (and a bowl win on top of that) is a terrific season.

Hilinski will spark our offense by giving more players opportunities to be successful.

We ran a QB sneak for the first time in several years last week against Bama.  Stuff like that matters.

Despite Muschamp's reputation as a defensive guru, there are still no stand-outs on defense.

When was the last time we had a pick-6?

It will be one game at a time for me this season.

Last pick 6 was last season vs Missouri... Sherrod Greene.  Hope we can make it happen again this season!

Exactly.   We have at least 2 more almost certain losses coming...that’s 4 losses already my friends.

Mizzou, Kentucky, Florida and A&M are what I would consider sort of 50/50 games and that’s probably being generous.  I mean you can flip a coin 4 heads in a row but you can flip one 4 tails too. So let’s say we split those and now we have 6 losses.

We would need to be perfect against Tennessee, Vandy and App St to just be 6-6.   That seems reasonable, but statistics are funny.  Let’s just say for simplicity sake that we have an 80% chance to win each of those individual games.  The likelihood that we could win all three is only 51%.  So...there is a 49% chance we could go 5-7.

The only way we can go 7-5 is to win 3 of the 4 tossup games.  Basically we need to hope Alabama and UNC were flukes and that our defense is a lot better than it looks.

Mizzou & Kentucky hold the keys to the success for the season. Hopefully a 3-2 outcome. The Gamecocks get a week off before facing Georgia in Athens, so most likely will be 3-3 with Florida at home win at home 4-3, Then the Vil's up next, win up there 5-3. Vandy at home win that 6-3.  Appalachian St. at home win 7-3. that leaves A&M and the taters left. best upset is A&M Best outcome 8-4 or 7-5. Key to this to fall? Have to beat the next 2  Mizzou & Kentucky. If not no winning season.

If the team can shore up the Some Lb play and the secondary can pull it together, this team could do big things. Move Muk to safety and tell Jam until he can prove his worth, he will ride the pine. Sorry, this is college ball and not the babysitters club. earn your keep!

I really wondered about him after watching CSU, but last week he showed us all that he is really a good QB. That many yards against Bama. Throwing fast enough to avoid but a couple sacks. One stupid rookie pass to the end zone when we were being blown out. I was just really impressed with the guy and was really glad we finally got a really good QB. I think this Saturday he will shine like he did against CSU. Not saying Missou is like CSU, saying Missou is nothing like Bama. They will be trying to slow down Rico and Feaster, and Ryan is going to have a field day. Then when the Secondary backs up, Rico and Feaster will bust thru for lots of yards. Over / under is 61 and I think we can get 35-40 of those.

As far as potential, I only see 2 two more losses if our D can improve. 8-4 is doable. If our D has more problems I still see 7-5 because Ryan and company are going to score a lot of points.

Well this thread is not aging well. At this point unfortunately it looks like a 3-4 win year.  I would rather have coach Elliot if that is the case we only lost most of those games by 1 score he motivated a very weak team.  We have much more talent now than that team did and we lost to unc who might lose to app state. Oh in case you didn't know we play them this year.

Welp. There it is.

Unfortunately I think that Mizzou atrocity is the dagger for the season. 4 wins is the top potential I see for this team. Tennessee, Vandy, and App St are the only games left we might win and I think App St is iffy. I could also see us dropping all 3, which is a terrible feeling. Looking back, it's hard to believe we outmatched CSU by such a huge margin, even for a bad FCS team but that game is clearly an aberration.

I currently feel this season has to potential to be one of the worst in the history of Gamecock football.

Well it looks like maybe two or three more wins for this year. I hate to be negative, but one has to be realistic. What was so frustrating about yesterday was two plays sealed our fate. The fumble/knocked down pass that gave Mizzou a TD and the 100 yard pick six. Take away those 14 points and give us a TD (instead of the pick six) and it's 21 to 20. I know you cannot "if" your way through a season, but it just seems like every break went against us. I was glad to see that our players didn't give up and played hard to the very end. Our best hope going forward is be a "spoiler" for one of our future highly rated opponents. We have a lot of talent on this team. If we could just play mistake free for 60 minutes, we might actually win one we're supposed to lose.

It does seem like anything that could go wrong, will.   You could hear it in Tommy's voice and in Todds on the radio. It's like we are snake bit.

Agreed the talent is there. Champ can recruit. If we can get some decent coaching, we'll win a few games
