Darnell Jefferies visits Gamecocks; more 2018 recruiting notes

Feb. 21, 2017

South Carolina visitors

Three-star defensive tackle Darnell Jefferies (6-foot-3, 265) and several of his teammates from Newton High School in Covington, Ga., visited South Carolina on Monday.

Also on campus were 2018 running back Nuru Tinch, 2018 safety Jaison Taylor, 2018 wide receiver Tyrese Peacock and 2019 running back Adarius Thomas.

Jefferies, the No. 32-ranked defensive tackle in the country, has offers from South Carolina, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. Tinch (5-11, 202) has offers from Ball State, Troy and UAB. He’s ranked as the No. 80 running back in the Class of 2018.

“It was great,” Jefferies said of his first trip to South Carolina. “It was wonderful.”

He added, “We toured the campus. We checked out the dorms, also toured the facility and the academic center.”

What was Muschamp’s message to Jefferies?

You’re welcome to return.

“He talked about me coming back in the spring and the summer, coming back for the spring game, but also some camps and junior day,” Jefferies said.

On Saturday, he’ll take his second trip to Alabama. Clemson will host him for the first time the following weekend.

Georgia and Georgia Tech had Jefferies on campus earlier this year.

Before the recruits left, they heard from South Carolina defensive back Steven Montac, who graduated from Newton.

“He was just (saying) the (Gamecock) coaching staff, they always want to help you,” Jefferies said. “They’re going to teach you like my family. They’re going to talk down to you on the field, but they’re going to try to make you better.”

Prospect roundup

2018 3-star WR Demarcus Gregory (Duncan, S.C.) was recently offered by Arkansas. Word is he’ll take a visit to Florida State this weekend.
2018 3-star LB Channing Tindall (Columbia, S.C.) picked up an offer from Florida on Monday night. South Carolina will host him this weekend for junior day.
2018 CB Jonathan Gipson (Hoschton, Ga.) is also confirmed as a visitor for South Carolina’s junior day.
2018 5-star RB Zamir White (Laurinburg, N.C.) is no longer hearing from South Carolina. He’s expected to sign with Clemson, Georgia or North Carolina.
All Xavier Thomas, all the time

It’s Tuesday morning and this is our fourth (hopefully) item you’ve read on 5-star defensive end Xavier Thomas.

Beyond what was written Sunday, Monday and again on Monday, there isn’t much left to share, in terms of where things stand in Thomas’ recruitment.

Now enrolled at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., the former Wilson High School (Florence, S.C.) defensive end shared his thoughts on a couple of non-next-level items. SEC Country reporter Zach Abolverdi provided the quotes:

On returning to The Opening:

“I experienced this last year. Last year, I was nervous. This year, I’m more comfortable. I’ve been here before, but it’s great coming out here against all this competition.”
On life at IMG:

“It’s been a great experience. It’s been way better than I thought it would be. Everybody that’s there just wants to get better each and every day. We all have the same goal.”
“Just the fact that I have all of the opportunities I need to succeed there, and to just have a history of players going there. I’d already talked to players. The year before, I was supposed to go, but I didn’t go, so it was just more comfortable coming this year.”
