That’s hardly the case with Alabama coach Nick Saban, who’s not quite as accessible.
“I can’t pick up the phone and call him; they have to set up the time,” Kinlaw said. “It’s just like having a conversation with a regular person. We talk about football and life, a real casual conversation. I take it as talking to another coach. His reputation doesn’t really mean anything to me.”
Kinlaw also told Kornblut that he continues to have contact with Tennessee, even though South Carolina, Alabama and Southern Cal were previously announced as his finalists.
The decision will be announced on Jan. 31.
Skinny: Although this battle is a three-way race, with another suitor on the outside, it’s believed to be between South Carolina and Alabama.
Demarcus Gregory sets decision deadline
Three-star wide receiver Demarcus Gregory told Kornblut that he will announce a decision on May 27.
“South Carolina has been talking to me every day and Clemson has been checking up on me here and there,” Gregory said. “USC says that if I come, I’ll have a chance to start as a freshman if I compete, and they just say they are going to keep in touch.”
Gregory, who’s out of Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C., has an offer sheet that includes Louisville, North Carolina, N.C. State, Ole Miss and Wake Forest.
South Carolina offered in June.
Skinny: South Carolina hosted Gregory for a couple of game day visits this fall. There are two former Byrnes players on the Gamecocks roster and another on the way in January.
Aaron Sterling has scheduled official visits to South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia.
More on Aaron Sterling
On Wednesday, the 3-star defensive end Aaron Sterling told SEC Country about his interest in South Carolina, where he’ll take an official visit in January.
The No. 17-ranked strong-side defensive end in the Class of 2017 will also take official visits to Tennessee and Georgia. He also detailed some of the specifics with the Vols.
“I really like coach (Butch) Jones. Coach Jones hits me up, if not every day, every two days. I really like coach Jones,” Sterling said.
Skinny: Word on the street is that Georgia and Tennessee are not making as strong a push for the former Alabama commitment as South Carolina is.
Jalyn Phillips’ lone offer
For now, South Carolina is the only offer for 2019 safety Jalyn Phillips, a 6-foot, 185-pound prospect from Lawrenceville, Ga.
Gamecocks linebackers coach/special teams coordinator Coleman Hutlzer stopped by Archer High School during the spring. The Gamecocks offered in June.
“It was a good feeling,” Phillips said. “I worked hard for it, so it was a good feeling.”
Conference affiliation is working in their favor.
“SEC … they’re a pretty big school in the SEC,” Phillips said.
Skinny: Phillips was one of several National Team players in the Elite Georgia Classic sporting Auburn gear before and/or after practice on Wednesday.
