Decision day for LB Ernest Jones; 2019 CB talks SpursUp visit

Decision day

Three-star linebacker Ernest Jones will reveal his commitment during a ceremony on at 7 p.m. Friday in Waycross, Ga.

Duke, Florida, Georgia Tech and South Carolina were among the finalists, which he announced late last month.

Jones, a junior at Ware County High School, spoke highly of the Gamecocks.

“When I stepped on campus, I just fell in love with everything,” he said. “I loved the South Carolina football team, growing up watching them, so I’ve always been a fan of some sort. Just to get on campus to talk with coach [Will] Muschamp and for them to tell me how they would use me if I were to commit there, it feels like it would be a great fit for me.”

According to the 247Sports Crystal Ball, Duke is the favorite.

“They were my leader, but at the point in time when I said it, I’d only visited Georgia Tech and Auburn. At that time, they were,” Jones said.

South Carolina hosted him for three visits this spring. Trip No. 1 to Columbia was in March. Jones (6-foot-2, 205 pounds) returned on April 1 for the spring game. His father joined him a couple of weeks later for the third one.

“He just wanted to see how it would feel and see how it would compare to Duke, because that’s the only school he (had) been to,” Jones said. “That was, really, mainly about him. I’d heard everything they’d said.”

Good first visit

Jammie Robinson has yet to pick up a star rating from 247Sports, but his profile already includes an impressive list of offers: Alabama, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Kentucky and South Carolina.

Last Saturday, the Gamecocks hosted him and a pair of teammates for the SpursUp recruiting event.

“The campus is pretty huge and their indoor practice facility was great, too. And they talked about rebuilding the weight room and stuff, making it bigger. That was pretty cool, too,” Robinson said.

Robinson (5-11, 180) and his two teammates, 2018 4-star outside linebacker Quay Walker and 2019 defensive tackle DeAngelo Griffin, spent time with Muschamp, defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson and Bucks coach Mike Peterson.

“[Muschamp] talked to me about a lot of things. I asked him a question about the education and stuff. And coach T-Rob, we were just joking around with him and coach Peterson also,” Robinson said.

Muschamp, he added, was “very cool.”

“I’m looking forward to going back up there and spending more time with him,” Robinson said.

The Gamecocks defensive coordinator made a good impression.

“That’s my boy,” Jammie said. “T-Rob is crazy.”

Peterson serves as the area recruiter at Crisp County High School (Cordele, Ga.).
