Defensive end Javon Kinlaw (Goose Creek, S.C.) plans to be at South Carolina this weekend for the Gamecocks second Junior Day. “I want to get a look at the learning facilities to see where I would be learning if I went there,” Kinlaw said. “Probably (70 percent) if I like my visit I will commit to them.”
Gamecocks recruiting coordinator Steve Spurrier Jr. is the 6-foot-7, 265-pound Kinlaw’s recruiter-of-record. Kinlaw says he talks to Spurrier Jr. “every day”. “They are a great group of guys,” he said. “I couldn’t ask for a better coaching staff. They are always bothering me but in a good way. They are the only school that I really talk to.”
South Carolina offensive tackle Brandon Shell, who played at Goose Creek late in his high school career, has spoken with Kinlaw about being in Columbia and the Gamecocks’ program. “(Shell) just tells me it’s a great place,” Kinlaw said. “He says it’s a place that I want to be at and get my education from.”
Kinlaw said he’s coming to USC with teammate DL Marvin Cuyler and Cuyler’s mom. He expects to arrive early Saturday morning before the activities are slated to begin at 9:00 AM. One of the first things he wants to do is meet and talk with new co-defensive coordinator Jon Hoke.
Though Kinlaw has a good frame to play offensive tackle, all schools are recruiting him as a defensive end. Kinlaw is borderline academically, but has tutors in place and a plan to qualify.
“I will make it,” he said. “I know I will make it.”
