Early names to know in the 2020 class
June 30, 2017
While it’s a bit too early to slap together a to-do list for South Carolina in the 2020 recruiting cycle, there are already a handful that could eventually emerge as priorities.
Each of the prospects below visited earlier this month and has an offer from the Gamecocks.
DE Jacolbe Cowan
Hometown: Charlotte, N.C.
Other offers: Florida State, Georgia, Louisville, Notre Dame, Penn State
Skinny: During Jacolbe Cowan’s first visit of the year to Columbia, he was offered by the Gamecocks during a meeting in Will Muschamp’s office. When Cowan was back a couple of weeks ago for the first 7-on-7 tournament, Muschamp and defensive line coach Lance Thompson weren’t far away.
OLB Jaylen Harrell
Hometown: Tampa, Fla.
Other offers: Louisville, Ohio State, Oklahoma
Skinny: Just days after South Carolina stepped forward with an offer at camp, Jaylen Harrell scooped up Ohio State. He’s got national-level-recruit written all over him.
DE Tonka Hemingway
Hometown: Conway, S.C.
Other offers: Clemson, Georgia State
Skinny: South Carolina’s coaches gave Tonka Hemingway and his family an awful lot of attention when he visited Columbia for camp. His older brother, Junior, was a wide receiver at Michigan before going on to the NFL, where he played for the Kansas City Chiefs.
DT Alex Huntley
Hometown: Columbia, S.C.
Other offers: None
Skinny: Alex Huntley plays locally at Hammond School, where one of his teammates, Jackson Muschamp, is the son of the Gamecocks head coach.
OT Tate Ratledge
Hometown: Rome, Ga.
Other offers: Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee
Skinny: Tate Ratledge attends Darlington School, Muschamp’s alma mater. There’s one selection on the 247Sports crystal ball that’s got Ratledge following in Muschamp’s footsteps to Athens, Ga.
WR Porter Rooks
Hometown: Charlotte, N.C.
Other offers: Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia
Skinny: Like Cowan, his teammate at Providence Day School, Porter Rooks has already taken several visits to South Carolina. And, like Cowan, he was offered by the Gamecocks during a meeting in Muschamp’s office.
RB Jordon Simmons
Hometown: Powder Springs, Ga.
Other offers: Georgia, Michigan
Skinny: Jordon Simmons’ older brother, Tyler, is a wide receiver at Georgia. South Carolina hosted Jordon for the first camp session of the summer.
