Eligibility glitch might cost USC DE Darrius Caldwell

January 27, 2014

The commitment of DE Darrius Caldwell of Pearl River JC, MS to USC is up in the air today over an NCAA eligibility question dating back to his time at Illinois according to TheBigSpur.com. Caldwell signed with the Illini in 2011 as a full qualifier only to have the NCAA deem him a non-qualifer in November of that year. However, Caldwell remained at the school as a redshirt then played for the Illini as a sophomore before transferring to Pearl River for the 2013 season. Where this is a problem for USC is a SEC rule requiring a junior college transfer who was a non-qualifier to spend three semesters at the junior college before being eligible to transfer to a SEC school. Caldwell does not meet that criteria and thus at this point, barring a successful appeal by USC somewhere down the line, he can't enroll for the 2014 season. Caldwell will take an official visit to Arizona State this weekend along with one of his Pearl River teammates according to ASUDevils.com. Arizona State recruiting coordinator Chip Long recruited Caldwell to Illinois when he was on the staff there.
