ESPN: Gamecocks’ signing class an SEC surprise

South Carolina No. 27 in ESPN class rankings for 2016

A week after National Signing Day, one ESPN.com writer considers South Carolina the surprise signing class in the SEC for 2016.

ESPN’s Edward Aschoff picked the Gamecocks in a piece he and Alex Scarborough co-authored that “decided to take a look at the classes not everyone is talking about.”(Scarborough chose Arkansas.)

“For his first class as the Gamecocks’ new head coach, Will Muschamp did a pretty good job in certain areas of need,” Aschoff wrote.

Aschoff singled out quarterback Brandon McIlwain, wide receiver Bryan Edwards and JUCO cornerback Jamarcus King among his impact signees for USC.

The Gamecocks’ class, which ranked in the 70s nationally shortly after Muschamp was hired, finished anywhere from No. 26 to 28 (including 27 by ESPN). The group was helped by the addition of four commitments on signing day, including four-star defensive tackle Stephon Taylor of New Orleans.
“Keep an eye on ESPN 300 members Keir Thomas and Stephon Taylor, who could be a dynamic duo up front,” Aschoff said.
