We haven't been blown out this year and these players are trying hard to win.. They are laying the ground work for future Carolina teams...
I really like this team!! They play with heart!!! I can live with losses under Martin vs. losses under Horn!

With a bunch of hold-overs and new guys, Martin has done some nice things: Improved on rebounding, much better this year than in recent years, and we have more assists than I can remember. These are the "little things" that will prove to be big in the next 2-3 years.

I have seen a much better organized game-plan for the team this season than in the final years under Horn. Horn's teams declined in most every offensive stat from year to year: scoring ppg, FG%, etc. Under Horn, the team would dribble the ball, dribble, the ball, dribble the ball. The others not with the ball just stood and watched. There was no spacing, no ball movement from player to player. And because the other 4 were standing around, that meant the defense was ALSO standing around...

When you have the ball, you work the ball around the horn, and the teammates that Don't have the ball should be in constant movement. This FORCES the defense move as well, and with picks and screens to create openings and poor matchups that you can exploit. When the defense doesn't have to move around, they don't get confused or lose their man, and will be in your face all the time...

So under Horn, our offense was typically a lot of dribbling and standing around, then the shot clock runs down and it's a poor heave at the rim with a defender all in your face because you never made them move. And because they never moved around they are also in great shape to rebound the miss from your heaved up poor shot selection at the buzzer.

Under Coach Martin, I see a LOT more intelligent spacing, movement of players without the ball, passing of the ball, and proper placement on the court for higher-percentage shots. The only thing is we're missing a lot of those high-percentage shots, and are not executing. We're also still making dumb fouls and turnovers, although we've improved on the TOs in the past 2-3 games. But we need players that can make the shots when they get them. I guess that will come in the next couple of seasons, but I like Coach Martin's approach thus far: he IS coaching the team, something I saw very little of from Horn....

Agree 100%  ConwayGamecock Good post!!

I also think Carrera needs to improve on his fouling....Slawson too, but at this point in his career I doubt that happens. Slawson just doesn't have a high basketball IQ. I think Carrera is much smarter, but he's been getting in foul trouble early in games and we need him on the floor for offense and rebounding. As well as his natural energy I think boosts the team...
