FEATURED Touring the athletic facilities at South Carolina, where football needs to catch up
Feb. 26, 2017
Typically, when an SEC football coach talks about his school’s need to “upgrade facilities,” I shake my head. I’ve toured the athletic facilities on 10 of the 14 SEC campuses in the past handful of years, and can assure you they are uniformly exceptional.
SEC football coaches complaining about needing better facilities are akin to corporate CEOs complaining about needing better private jets.
First-world problems.
But South Carolina’s Will Muschamp says his program needs upgraded facilities, and after touring them recently, I see he has a point. For the Gamecocks to continue competing in the SEC East – or in their home state against Clemson – an investment is required.
It’s coming. A new training area recently was completed, a first-class $14 million-plus indoor practice facility was opened in 2015, $50 million has been budgeted for a new football operations building to open in late 2018 and millions of dollars in upgrades to William-Brice Stadium are on the way.
Before starting our tour, “Coach Boom” had one demand (below).
Will Muschamp’s two demands for anyone entering Williams-Brice Stadium.
