Junior defensive end/outside linebacker D.J. Wonnum enters the 2018 season as one of the top returning players on Muschamp’s defense. A lightly recruited 3-star prospect out of Stephenson High School (Stone Mountain, Ga.), Wonnum committed to Iowa State and Indiana before signing with South Carolina in February 2016.
J.T. Ibe carried even less of a recruiting profile when he signed with Rice as a 2-star athlete out of Mansfield (Tex.) High School in 2014. Minnesota was his only other offer. Now, the graduate transfer safety could potentially join Wonnum on the Gamecocks defense later this spring.
South Carolina is set to host Ibe for an official visit on March 3. For now, that’s the only upcoming trip on his schedule, though he’s already taken official visits to Iowa State and Indiana.
Please, excuse the random observation that means absolutely nothing, especially if Ibe doesn’t end up at South Carolina. If he does, Ibe could play a significant role in helping Muschamp construct his third Gamecocks defense.
The two spoke on Sunday, according to an interview with Phil Kornblut of SportsTalkSC.
“He was just catching up and said they were going to set up a visit,” Ibe said. “I think he’s pretty excited about me. He wants to get me down and see the program and see if I like it.”
South Carolina, of course, has two spots remaining in the 2018 signing class.
Another offensive line option
Because South Carolina’s 2019 recruiting class includes commitments from three offensive linemen, just two spots remain at the position for the Gamecocks.
There are plenty of highly rated targets still on the radar, including 4-star guard Caedan Wallace, a 6-foot-5, 315-pound prospect from Princeton, N.J. South Carolina has hosted him for two visits, most recently for the Clemson game.
“I like how the current coaches are running the program. The facilities and the coaches being hands on really stands out,” Wallace said.
A second possibility at wide receiver?
Another wide receiver spot is available in the Gamecocks’ 2019 class — 4-star Jamario Holley (Rock Hill, S.C.) snagged one of the openings earlier this month.
Four-star Zion Puckett (Griffin, Ga.) could be among options for the other. Puckett, who’s ranked by the 247Sports composite as the No. 37 wide receiver in the country, is listed as an athlete by Rivals.
The Gamecocks are set to host him for a visit on May 3.
