Former Georgia, Louisville CB Shaq Wiggins considering South Carolina
April 07, 2017
Shaq Wiggins started eight games as a freshman at Georgia in 2013, but when defensive coordinator Todd Grantham left for Louisville, he followed.
After three seasons at Louisville, Grantham took the same position at Mississippi State. Wiggins was expected to follow as a graduate transfer.
However, Louisville coach Bobby Petrino has reportedly blocked Wiggins from going to Mississippi State. According to Edward Aschoff of ESPN, Wiggins is also blocked from transferring to Kentucky, Purdue, Notre Dame and Western Kentucky.
“I really don’t know what’s his state of thinking or why he chose to put Mississippi State on there,” Wiggins said of Petrino. “It’s something personal, but I have no idea why. It’s really not fair.”
It could end up working out for Will Muschamp. An SEC Country source previously indicated that South Carolina was running second behind Mississippi State.
And Aschoff wrote that Wiggins is “strongly considering” South Carolina and Tennessee.
“There are a lot of options out there,” Wiggins said. “There are a lot of good situations out here for me and my skill set. I have to just take it slow and think about a lot of stuff.”
As a freshman at Georgia, Wiggins led the team with 2 interceptions.
In 2015, his most productive at Louisville, Wiggins started every game and recorded a team-high 11 pass breakups. Injuries limited him to eight games last season.
Coming out of Sandy Creek High School (Tyrone, Ga.), Wiggins was rated as a 4-star and ranked as the No. 12 cornerback in the class of 2013.
South Carolina has kicked the tires on a handful of graduate transfer options, including former Duke quarterback Thomas Sirk, who took an official visit last weekend. On Friday, he announced his final season would be played at East Carolina.
Minnesota defensive end Gaelin Elmore will take an official visit to South Carolina, which starts on Sunday. Arizona is, apparently, hosting him this weekend. A trip to East Carolina is also on the docket.
