Four-star athlete Jaylin Simpson was back at South Carolina on Saturday with Frederica Academy (St. Simon’s Island, Ga.) classmate Jashawn Sheffield and 2019 linebacker Jakeen Harris (Savannah, Ga.).
“It was nice. I’d been there before, for a camp, but I actually got to see all the inside stuff. It was nice to visit,” said Simpson of his junior day visit.
According to the 247Sports composite, he’s the No. 20 athlete in the Class of 2019. Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson are recruiting him to play in the Gamecocks’ secondary.
“Me and coach ‘T-Rob’ had a nice conversation, and Coach Muschamp as well,” Simpson said. “They basically told me that they wanted me to come play, so that really stood out.”
Simpson (5-foot-11, 165 pounds) is impressed with their track record of coaching defensive backs.
“It definitely bumps them up a little bit in the schools that I like, just for that reason,” he said.
Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami and Ohio State are among the schools also receiving consideration, but Simpson does like the direction of South Carolina’s program, because “they’re definitely building.”
“So, if I end up going there,” he said, “I think I’ll definitely help with what they’re building there.”
