4 star Running back CJ Freeman (Greensboro, N.C./Northern Guilford) plans to visit South Carolina this weekend for the Gamecocks’ Junior Day and practice.
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Freeman has struck up a relationship with one of the recent South Carolina greats and that has swung momentum in the way of the Gamecocks.
“I actually talk with Marcus Lattimore a lot through Twitter and whenever I go on the visits I get to talk to him,” Freeman said. “It’s basically really cool to get to talk to one of the best college running backs of all time, before he got hurt, and him telling me all about South Carolina and all they have to offer.”
Freeman, who said the Gamecocks are recruiting him the hardest currently, talked about the basis for his conversations with Lattimore.
“He basically says he thinks I am a younger version of him. Everything he did with his playing style, he says that I do and I would be a great fit in that offense. You can’t think anything else but positive when it comes from him. He’s one of the greatest running backs to ever come out of South Carolina, so when he says it you have a great response. It’s something that stays with you.”
Freeman also has a good relationship with Gamecocks running backs coach Everette Sands and other members of the South Carolina coaching staff.
“Sands is a pretty cool dude I went up there for the Georgia game and they offered me and we just sort of clicked,” Freeman said. “(South Carolina head coach) Steve Spurrier, he knows what he’s doing, it’s the SEC and they have had some pretty big-time running backs. They have some good running backs right now as well. I really like their offense and how the running game is a big emphasis in that offense right now. Plus, it’s in the SEC. You can’t get any better than that.
“(Sands) and I talk every week and talk through DM on Twitter,” Freeman said. “I also talk to (area recruiter) Shawn Elliott every day, (recruiting coordinator) Steve Spurrier Jr.”
What does Freeman hope to learn in Columbia this Saturday?
“I am taking another glance, taking another look at everything because it’s my second visit and talk to (Sands) on a personal level,” he said. “If Marcus is there, I want to talk to him, too. I get to watch their practice, too, so I get to see everything about how their running backs are looking and how (Sands) goes through his practice with his running backs.”
Freeman has been on the record as wanting to make a decision this summer and while he still has plans to visit Virginia Tech again, Wake Forest, Auburn and perhaps Washington State and Georgia Southern, he can’t rule out making a pledge as early as Saturday.
“If I feel confident enough, I could potentially feel it and commit,” Freeman said. “I can’t really say exactly when I will get the feeling.”
Along with the Gamecocks, the Hokies has been the strongest with Freeman. The Hokies were his first offer and landed stud cornerback Mook Reynolds out of Northern Guilford in the 2015 cycle.
“I have a strong relationship with all of the coaches (at Virginia Tech) right now,” Freeman said. “The running backs coach Shane Beamer and I talk to each other all the time and I am really comfortable with their coaching staff.”
Reynolds has been talking up the Hokies as well.
“He was back on spring break and telling me how everything has gone well and how it’s very exciting to be there and will be very exciting when I get there.”
The Hokies and Gamecocks, along with Auburn (no offer) and West Virginia (no offers) are the strongest with Wake Forest, Washington State, Tennessee (no offer) and Georgia Southern also in the hunt as things stand today.
