Future Gamecocks recognized as their state’s best by USA Today

December 27, 2018

Several future South Carolina football players picked up all-state honors in their states by USA Today on Thursday.

Zacch Pickens, the top recruit in the Gamecocks’ Class of 2019, was named SC Defensive Player of the Year. He made 87 tackles (53 solo, 15 for loss), six sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery in leading the Yellow Jackets (14-1) to the Class 5A state final game.

Pickens also rushed for a team-high 889 yards and 21 TDs on 104 carries. He was Defensive MVP of the Shrine Bowl this month and will play in the Under Armour All-Star game next week.

Pickens was joined on the SC first team by defensive back Cam Smith, offensive lineman Tyshawn Wannamaker and receiver Xavier Legette. Tight end Keshawn Toney was a second-team selection.

Tight end Traevon Kenion was a first-team selection in North Carolina. Offensive lineman Jakai Moore earned first-team honors in Virginia.

Defensive lineman Joseph Anderson and receiver Keveon Mullins were second-team selections in Tennessee.
