Carolina 12  Miss St. 4

with 14:40 left in first half

Starters for tonight's game for the Gamecocks:

Eric Smith
Bruce Ellington
Lakeem Jackson
Brian Richardson
Minda Kacinas

This will be the first start of the season for Ellington.

MIssissippi State will counter with:

Jr. Jalen Steele (6'3 194)
Jr. Colin Borchert (6'8 231)
Soph. Trivante Bloodman (6'0 182)
Fr. Gavin Ware (6'9 270)
Fr. Craig Sword (6'3 189)

We are about six minutes away from tip-off.

Not a very big crowd here, very similar to what I have been seeing at Colonial Life Arena.

There is just not a lot of hope for the Bulldog program right now.

Gamecocks will be in the garnet jersey's tonight.

First possession results in a turnover for the Gamecocks, judging by Martin's reaction on the bench, someone did not know where they were going on offense.

Second possession see's Richardson have his shot blocked.

Third possession, better ball movement as the Bulldogs go zone, nice job of getting the ball around the perimeter but then Eric Smith tries a cross court pass and it sails into the second row of the bleachers.

Three possessions, two turnovers and a blocked shot.

Fourth possession, Bulldogs stay zone, good movement again and Richardson buries a three from the left corner. 4-3 Bulldogs lead.

Fifth offensive possession, Lakeem Jackson tries to drive on the left wing, kicks across the lane and Smith drives into the lane for a hanging floater. Gamecocks take the lead.

Sixth offensive possession after Smith takes a charge on the defensive end of the floor see's the Bulldogs try a little half court trap. Gamecocks break it and then Ellington penetrates and finds Richardson, same spot in the corner and he buries another.

Seventh possession see's the Gamecocks moving the ball very well again and Ellington curls off a screen to bury a short jumper.

Gamecocks really picked it up offensively as we hit the under 16 timeout,

10-4 lead with 15:23 to go.

Richardson with 6 pts
Ellington with 2 pts
Smith with 2 pts.

Gamecocks have taken two charges this far as well.

Carrera checks in out of the timeout.

Eight possession is in transition and Ellington catches and then travels.

Gamecocks go full court press, Jackson tips the ball in the air and catches it. Turnover results in an Eric Smith runner and the Gamecocks are off to a fantastic staff.

Takes 47 seconds of game action for Carrera to pick up his first foul of the game on the defensive end of the floor. Bulldogs make one of two at the foul line.

Bulldogs go man to man and get aggressive while doing it, they force a turnover that was the fault of Brenton Williams but will be attributed to Ellington. Bulldogs get a lay up out of it.

After a good start and nice words by me on Richardson he has air balled two straight shots. One short and then one long. Bulldogs have trimmed lead to 12-9.

Missed three by the Bulldogs results in an offensive rebound and put back, Carrera gets the foul and that is his second one in 3:30 of game action.

11:53 to go, Gamecocks lead 12-11, Bulldogs will be at the line shooting one.

Carrera has to control his fouling......

14 to 14 tied game with 7:59 left in first half

17 to 14 Miss. St leads with 7:27 to play in first half

After the great start, Bulldogs are currently on an 8-0 run and the Gamecocks have lost all rhythm on offense.

Appears the Bulldog coach Rich Ray really got after his team to pick up the defensively intensity and they have done that which has caused major problems for the Gamecocks. They are struggling to get comfortable in their offense and are not being able to move the ball as freely as they were in the first four minutes.

Gamecocks have also gotten spread out and are not getting any offensive rebounds. They are getting one shot and that is it.

Eric Smith makes a transition lay up to end what was a 10-0 run by the Bulldogs that had resulted in turning an eight point deficit into a two point lead.

Ellington uses a high ball screen, gets into the lane and then tries to find Leonard on the wing but he throws it into the crowd. Ellington was probably better off shooting the short floater there.

Ellington drives baseline and finds Slawson underneath, it goes through Slawson's hands and right now Ellington is going to end up with about 15 turnovers but only about three will actually be his fault.

7:27 to go, Gamecocks have lost all momentum gained in the opening minutes and Martin is searching for the right combination. 16-14 Bulldogs.

21-18 cocks lead with 4:20 to go in first half Miss. St. at the foul line

South Carolina is going to end up with close to 30 turnovers at this rate. Laimonas Chatkevicius throws the ball away on the offensive end of the floor, sprints to the defensive end of the floor, gets the rebound and then throws it away again.

Bulldogs are staying in a 2-3 extended zone that is really pressuring the Gamecocks and they have not handled it well.

Ellington knocks down a three pointer with the shot clock down to two. That ties the game at 17 all with 5:50 remaining in the half.

Chatkevicius gets the ball down low and may have walked but gets away with and draws the foul. He goes to the foul line to shoot two. He makes the first and the second.

Gamecocks had 12 points, five minutes into the ball game, they have scored just seven in the last 10 minutes, a lay up by Smith, three pointer by Ellington and two free throws from Chatkevicius.

Jackson gets fouled going for the lay up, he tries the one handed shot again, misses both and he is now 0-for-5 on the season with the one handed form.

Brian Richardson able to grab a missed three pointer by Chatkevicius and get the put back to give him eight points on the night this far.

2:59 mark, Gamecocks with a three point lead, 21-18 as we hit the final media timeout of the half.

23 to 20 Cocks lead 2:11 left in first half

26 to 26 tied up with half time.......

We are a turnover machine. Ty and Thornwell can't get here soon enough.

South Carolina can't take care of the ball but Ellington gets loose and bangs down a three pointer to tie the game at 26 as we head to halftime, although not before the Gamecocks were able to add one more turnover to their stat line. Incredible!

Neither the Gamecocks or Bulldogs doing anything to change the media's perception in the pre-season that they were the 13th and 14th best teams in the SEC.

It has been ugly after that first five minutes by the Gamecocks.

18:47 left in the game 31-26 cocks lead
