Gamecock coaches get in to see OL John Simpson

December 4, 2015 by Phil Kornblut LINK: SportsTalk

Fort Dorchester OL John Simpson got a visit at school Tuesday from USC recruiters Shawn Elliott and Steve Spurrier Jr.  The two Gamecock coaches know they are fighting a bit of an uphill battle for Simpson right now because the program is in flux, but they went about their business nonetheless in calling on one of the state’s top prospects.

“Basically he (Elliott) was telling me he’s not sure where he’s going to be,” Simpson said.  “He came the day before he had an interview and he was telling me he doesn’t know where he’s going to be at and he wished me the best of luck, stuff like that.  We talked nothing about recruiting.  We talked more about personal things.”

Elliott has always been one of Simpson’s favorite recruiters and coaches and if he remains in some capacity with the Gamecocks, that would be a bonus for them as it pertains to him.

“I feel like it would mean a lot because I like his coaching style and.  I like the things that he does and the way he carries himself when it comes down to coaching.”

Simpson met Thursday with his recruiter from Tennessee and LSU recruiter Kevin Steele will visit the school Friday. He said Florida will be in next week.  As for Clemson, Simpson said he’s not sure when the Tigers are coming in but he’s been in touch with recruiter Tony Elliott on the phone.

“Basically he was just wanting me to take one of my officials there,” he said.  “We had a long conversation about that and other things that were more personal.”

Simpson hasn’t scheduled any official visits yet but said Clemson and Florida each will get one.  He’s not sure on the others.  He said all of his top seven…Clemson, USC, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama and LSU are still in it with him but Clemson, Florida and LSU stand out the most right now.  He does not have a single favorite.  Simpson said he will take his recruiting into January.  He doesn’t want to go all the way to Signing Day but said he would if he needs to.

Not sure if Elliott will really help him deciding to join gamecocks, but whatever... elliott will leave
