Just fouling too much....we're going to lose this game at the free throw line....we're rebounding with the Bulldogs, and 3-pt Fgs are pretty even too. We're shooting slightly better than MSU, and have done all game long. The big difference is all those free throws.....

We give up too much defense with Frink and Leveque right now.  The McCreary injury hurts us bad right now.

Remember what I said about everyone on the floor scoring 2-4 points?  Moss and Hannibal have goose eggs.  Add their points, we’re good to go.

Gamecocks fall to Mississippi State  79-76  in Starkville, to fall to 16-10, and 8-5 in the SEC. Three Gamecocks scored in double digits with Maik Kotsar leading the way with 24 pts, and 6 rebounds. Jermaine Couisnard added 17 pts going 8-10 at the FT line, and AJ Lawson added 12 pts and 7 rebounds. The Gamecocks return home this Saturday to host LSU at Colonial Life Arena in a night game tipping off at 8:00 PM. Reports are that this game is nearly sold out already.....

Once again, USC loses a game because of FT.  Outscored 28-14 at the FT line.    USC just isn't a talented enough team to overcome that disparity.   Part of it is the referees don't call a fair game, but a lot of it is we foul way too much, and we don't attack the rim enough and draw enough fouls.   And then, we miss FT.    Our guards can't defend the opponent's guard and get beat on drives.     At this point in the season, I doubt there is anything that will change that plot.   We will only win those games that we can overcome being outscored on FT.

didnt play well enough defensively, got doubled up at the free throw line, they shot 50% from the field and 41.6% from 3.  turned the ball over too much in the 1st half which put us behind and whats frustrating is almost all of them were bad unforced turnovers against a team that doesnt force turnovers.  we ended up turning that margin around by the end of the game.  unfortunately we and not too many teams in general are going to win many games where you get outshot from the field, the 3pt line and the ft line.

that two turnover sequence by hannibal in the 1st half frustrated me to no end.  long bounce pass into what looked like the entire miss st defense.  then the next possession this was my impression, hannibal drives with lawson open for a 3 on the wing, one count hes wide open make the pass, two count hes still open make the pass, three count finally passes it to him but by that time a defender has rotated over for an easy steal.  hannibal at times shows good pg and playmaking instincts but lately too many times hes probing into trouble or not seeing open guys or waiting too long to get them the ball.  in a game we lost by 3, he was the only player on our team with a negative assist turnover ratio.  we're going to need for him to stop trying to do too much on that end if we're going to finish out this season like we hope.

also with minaya out we're down to 3 shooters, hard to win when 2 of them have bad nights from 3 and we play poorly overall defensively.

Our guard play was not good at all.   But, we have NO Senior guards and only one junior guard.   All but one of our guards are sophomores or freshmen.   Mostly freshmen.   This is a problem now, but should be less so next season, if everyone returns.   As of today, we will have no freshmen guards next season, which should mean better guard play next season.

@crowcutta Admittedly, we didn’t make the needed FTs, but that issue is a straw man argument.  We’ve won PLENTY of games this year where we have been outshot at the FT line.  I’ve shown those numbers elsewhere in this forum.

Where we REALLY got hurt tonight was the stupid fouls.  We gave them 36 opportunities at free points, and they hit 28 of them.  The vast majority of those were just DUMB fouls.  Bryant, Frink and Cousinard alone committed 14 of the fouls - statistically, basically every foul committed by those three converted into points at the line (14 fouls/28 points).  Bryant seems to be the worst offender right now.  He’s playing too fast for his game to work (on both ends of the court).  Now don’t get me wrong... I love all three of those guys, and want each of them to play well.  But Bryant and Frink in particular have GOT to stop with the dumb lean ins with the body and even dumber reach-ins.  Eliminate those mistakes, we run away with this game.  Frink is starting to come around defensively, but tonight was a bad outing for him.  Bryant had a second poor performance in a row... needs to clean things up.  He’s too valuable for that to happen.

Basically, what I’m trying to say is this... we played REALLY well against the one team in the league who could (and did) give us fits.  We DO NOT match up well against their strengths - particularly their length.  That’s why we had so many turnovers early... pressing inside too hard against long arms.

Our defense, for the most part was stifling to their key players.  Our offense, though not on point, was good enough that we had an opportunity to win even when it looked over.  Just take away the extra trips to the line for Miss. State, and it’s a different ballgame.

yeah the disparity is more important than the percentage, but i meant when the opposing teams shoots a better % from all ovr fg%, 3pt%, ft%, its hard to win.  we shot extremely well from 2 but very poor from 3.  we played a good team on the road and came up just short.  we forced a ton of turnovers, but when they did shoot they shot too high of a percentage and we gave up too many trips to the line against a team that shoots their free throws well.

Wasn't able to watch the game, but listened to the last few minutes.

MSST is just a bad match-up for us and, all other things being equal, this wasn't a bad loss for us.  The non-conference games that we should have won earlier in the season were the bad losses for us.

Frank was win one, lose one, against Bill Self and the Jayhawks when he was at K State.  Not necessarily worried about the home game with MSST down the road.

Apparently no one else is, either, because there are only 2,700 tickets left for Saturday's LSU game.

Fewer than 2,700 tickets remain for Saturday's SEC home matchup against LSU, which is set for a 6 p.m. ET tipoff at Colonial Life Arena.

Thought they made an interesting point on the broadcast about how it is more beneficial (for the NCAA tourney) for the road time to win the game instead of the home time. I know it didnt happen that way, but if we were going to split with MSU, we should have won at their place lol.

That's the NET ranking that they're talking about. Games are split into quadrants and the more Q1 wins you have, the better for your resume. Basically, it's factoring in the difficulty of playing on the road and weighting accordingly. MSU is ranked at 50 and we're at 62, which are both Q1 wins on the road and Q2 wins at home. Here's an article that details the rankings more in depth:

This is true.  The thing to keep in mind is that both teams will be strong contenders for the NCAAT without that road victory.  The resumes for the Gamecocks and for the Bulldogs with current rankings warrants a serious look.  If you go by pure NET rankings right now, MSU should be in (top 55 are typically considered strongly).  If we get the LSU win and the MSU win at home, our NET should rise to around 58-59, which is still borderline.  If we win out the rest and get a win or two in the SEC tourney... it would appear at that point that we're good to go.

Here are the NET rankings as of today:
