Just when it started looking ugly... Cocks come roaring back. Timeout Miss St.

Once again, USC loses a game because of FT. Outscored 28-14 at the FT line. USC just isn't a talented enough team to overcome that disparity. Part of it is the referees don't call a fair game, but a lot of it is we foul way too much, and we don't attack the rim enough and draw enough fouls. And then, we miss FT. Our guards can't defend the opponent's guard and get beat on drives. At this point in the season, I doubt there is anything that will change that plot. We will only win those games that we can overcome being outscored on FT.Gamecocks fall to Mississippi State 79-76 in Starkville, to fall to 16-10, and 8-5 in the SEC. Three Gamecocks scored in double digits with Maik Kotsar leading the way with 24 pts, and 6 rebounds. Jermaine Couisnard added 17 pts going 8-10 at the FT line, and AJ Lawson added 12 pts and 7 rebounds. The Gamecocks return home this Saturday to host LSU at Colonial Life Arena in a night game tipping off at 8:00 PM. Reports are that this game is nearly sold out already.....
Our guard play was not good at all. But, we have NO Senior guards and only one junior guard. All but one of our guards are sophomores or freshmen. Mostly freshmen. This is a problem now, but should be less so next season, if everyone returns. As of today, we will have no freshmen guards next season, which should mean better guard play next season.didnt play well enough defensively, got doubled up at the free throw line, they shot 50% from the field and 41.6% from 3. turned the ball over too much in the 1st half which put us behind and whats frustrating is almost all of them were bad unforced turnovers against a team that doesnt force turnovers. we ended up turning that margin around by the end of the game. unfortunately we and not too many teams in general are going to win many games where you get outshot from the field, the 3pt line and the ft line.
that two turnover sequence by hannibal in the 1st half frustrated me to no end. long bounce pass into what looked like the entire miss st defense. then the next possession this was my impression, hannibal drives with lawson open for a 3 on the wing, one count hes wide open make the pass, two count hes still open make the pass, three count finally passes it to him but by that time a defender has rotated over for an easy steal. hannibal at times shows good pg and playmaking instincts but lately too many times hes probing into trouble or not seeing open guys or waiting too long to get them the ball. in a game we lost by 3, he was the only player on our team with a negative assist turnover ratio. we're going to need for him to stop trying to do too much on that end if we're going to finish out this season like we hope.
also with minaya out we're down to 3 shooters, hard to win when 2 of them have bad nights from 3 and we play poorly overall defensively.
@crowcutta Admittedly, we didn’t make the needed FTs, but that issue is a straw man argument. We’ve won PLENTY of games this year where we have been outshot at the FT line. I’ve shown those numbers elsewhere in this forum.didnt play well enough defensively, got doubled up at the free throw line, they shot 50% from the field and 41.6% from 3. turned the ball over too much in the 1st half which put us behind and whats frustrating is almost all of them were bad unforced turnovers against a team that doesnt force turnovers. we ended up turning that margin around by the end of the game. unfortunately we and not too many teams in general are going to win many games where you get outshot from the field, the 3pt line and the ft line.

https://gamecocksonline.com/news/2020/2/18/mens-basketball-less-than-2-700-tickets-remain-for-saturdays-matchup-against-lsu.aspxFewer than 2,700 tickets remain for Saturday's SEC home matchup against LSU, which is set for a 6 p.m. ET tipoff at Colonial Life Arena.
That's the NET ranking that they're talking about. Games are split into quadrants and the more Q1 wins you have, the better for your resume. Basically, it's factoring in the difficulty of playing on the road and weighting accordingly. MSU is ranked at 50 and we're at 62, which are both Q1 wins on the road and Q2 wins at home. Here's an article that details the rankings more in depth:Thought they made an interesting point on the broadcast about how it is more beneficial (for the NCAA tourney) for the road time to win the game instead of the home time. I know it didnt happen that way, but if we were going to split with MSU, we should have won at their place lol.
This is true. The thing to keep in mind is that both teams will be strong contenders for the NCAAT without that road victory. The resumes for the Gamecocks and for the Bulldogs with current rankings warrants a serious look. If you go by pure NET rankings right now, MSU should be in (top 55 are typically considered strongly). If we get the LSU win and the MSU win at home, our NET should rise to around 58-59, which is still borderline. If we win out the rest and get a win or two in the SEC tourney... it would appear at that point that we're good to go.That's the NET ranking that they're talking about.
