GAMECOCK-GAMEDAY THREAD: South Carolina vs. Auburn ***Jan. 22, 2020 at 7:00pm.***

After the Kentucky and A&M games, I thought maybe this team had turned a corner.   I was wrong.   They are still the inconsistent and half-hearted bunch they have been all season.

You can't let a hot player get shots.  You have to keep someone on him.   We didn't.   Bad coaching.
I don't know... the guy was LITERALLY unconscious with his shooting.  He could just touch the ball and release and it was going in.  Even the announcers were saying as much.  When a guy who has gotten as few minutes as he did comes off the bench and has hot hands... there's just not a huge amount any coach or player can do.  Give him credit, it was just HIS night last night.

I thought we did a good job with the game plan that I would have utilized against Auburn.  Heck... we had the game tied up at the 10 minute mark in the second half (if I remember correctly).  Cambridge was a difference maker (just look at his numbers and you'll see that he carried the team, much like Jair Bolden did for us against A&M from 3 point range).

We lost to a team that was just better than we were last night.  It's not the end of the world, and I don't see that as inconsistent - I thought we played quite well overall.  We had to fight Cambridge's hot night AND the fact that Kotsar's shots weren't falling (and he WAS taking good shots... just not making them).  Those two key factors hurt us.  Otherwise, it wasn't THAT bad of a game (much like us vs. Fla or Tenn).

Not able to watch the game, but a hot 3-point shooter will defeat Frank's system if our guys aren't covering him.  Either that or more made FTs.

Any loss is bad now because we are essentially out of Mulligans.

I thought we might lose at least one game after this current round of injuries.

It seems like we are going through the reverse of the Dave Odom era.  Odom would win all of our non-conference games, but couldn't buy a conference win (especially on the road).  The end result was the NIT was the best we could hope for.

Now Frank is doing pretty good in the conference, but the non-conference losses are killing us and it's the same result from a win-loss standpoint.  At least Dave Odom got us to the NIT and we even won the Championship.

We've got 13 more conference games left, Nerf.  We have 2 wins and 3 losses.  All of our losses in conference play are against teams with VERY high NET rankings.  I, personally, think we can withstand as many as 6 total conference losses before our NCAA hopes are flushed for 2020.

All of this to say...Chill, friend.  The sky has not yet fallen.

Auburn outscored USC by 15 on FT. We lost by 13. So, it can be argued that we lost the game at the FT line. What's worse, this has been the rule this season, not the exception. Its a problem that MUST be corrected if this team is to have any chance at either the NCAA or NIT tournaments. Every loss simply cannot continue to be the result of being outscored from the FT line. Frank and his staff MUST find a way to fix this. It isn't something that can be allowed to continue. It must be fixed immediately or else the season is a lost cause. Not only must we begin getting as many FT shots as our opponents, but we also must make more.

Frank needs to recruit a guard who is quick enough to attack the rim off the dribble.   Maybe next season, Seventh Woods will be a guy who can help with that.   All of our current guards are big and not terribly quick, with the possible exception of Hannibal.   But he is out hurt right now.     Nevertheless, ALL of our guards, and forwards too need to be trying to attack the rim.   We have to draw more fouls and get more FT chances.    On defense we foul waaaaay to much, which puts our opponents on the line way too much.   That has to change as well.    If we are getting outscored by 10 + points on FT, the only way we can win is to make several more FG than our opponents.   That is too hard for this young team to do consistently.   A FT is the easiest shot in basketball.   We have to make more and cause our opponents to make less by fouling them less.
