Gamecocks decision to offer 2019 linebacker could pay off

February 20, 2018

Credit Savannah State for recognizing Kalen Deloach’s elite talent, but the coaches at the 4-star linebacker’s hometown school probably knew it wouldn’t take long for others to catch on.

South Carolina was first among the Power 5 programs to offer a scholarship to Deloach, a 2019 prospect from Islands High School in Savannah, Ga. The Gamecocks decision to offer before any other program on their level could pay off in the long run.

“It shows that they put trust in me and it shows my hard work finally paid off,” Deloach said. “I appreciate them being my first [Power 5] offer and keep trusting me.”

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound prospect visited South Carolina in September for the home opener against Kentucky. During the trip, Deloach spent time getting to know linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler, who’s running the point on his recruitment to South Carolina.

Deloach was back later in the season for one more game before returning in January for a junior day event.

“Everything,” Deloach said, when asked what he enjoyed about his last trip to South Carolina. “I spent a lot of time with Coach Hutzler and Coach Muschamp. We didn’t really talk about what I would do on the defensive side, but just kind of talked.”

For Deloach, who’s ranked by the 247Sports composite as the No. 24 outside linebacker in the Class of 2019, there’s a lot to like about South Carolina.

“The game day atmosphere, the relationships and the education that they get,” he said.

In 2018, Deloach’s offer sheet has grown substantially: Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, LSU, Tennessee and Texas A&M have all offered.

Alabama will host him Saturday. For the following weekend, he’s considering three destinations: Florida State, LSU or Tennessee.

Deloach, who’s ranked as the No. 45 overall prospect from the state of Georgia, has no list of favorites.

“I’m still kind of working towards that point,” he said. “I haven’t visited all the schools and I don’t know what they have to offer yet, so I haven’t made my top 5.”

A commitment probably won’t be made until after his senior season. Several factors will be considered in the meantime.

“When I visit, I want to make sure it feels like home and make sure my parents approve and just build relationships until I make my decision,” Deloach said.

I'm sure it will
