Gamecocks eyeing another graduate transfer option

South Carolina could use some help along the defensive line. Though the Gamecocks will welcome a few more bodies when Javon Kinlaw, Aaron Sterling and the rest of the 2018 signees arrive to campus this summer, counting on freshmen and sophomores to help up front isn’t the most reliable method.
With that in mind, South Carolina is pursuing former Minnesota defensive end Gaelin Elmore, a 6-foot-6, 275-pound senior with one season of eligibility remaining. Muschamp offered on Friday, after Elmore was granted his release.
“I really fit what they do and what they want in their defensive ends,” Elmore said, when asked what Muschamp had to say.
“They’re going to recruit me as hard as possible to get me down there and (he) just kind of showed me how I fit into their program and what they have now. It was a good conversation.”
A 3-star recruit out of Somerset, Wis., Elmore is listed by the 247Sports composite rankings as the No. 27 tight end in the Class of 2014. Michigan State, Nebraska, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin offered.
“I got recruited a little bit by (Muschamp) when he was at Florida, so I definitely know how he is a defensive head coach and defensive-minded,” Elmore said. “That’s really what he hangs his hat on, which I admire and something I could definitely get behind, being a defensive player.”
Arizona, Oklahoma and West Virginia are also involved, but South Carolina is the only school he’s scheduled to visit. He’ll be on campus the weekend of April 14.
“I thought it would be a lot different in the fact that I didn’t think I’d have as many options as I have right now,” Elmore said. “I thought it would be kind of low key, but it’s kind of picked up and blew up. Now, I’m talking to so many different schools every day.”
Scheme fit will play a big part in his decision. Elmore prefers to play on the end, though he said he’s capable of sliding inside for certain packages.
“It doesn’t have to be a 4-man front, but I would rather be on the edge, most of the time, so that’s a part of (the decision),” Elmore said. “But, really, it’s going to come down to the people. I really want to enjoy my last year or two, if that’s how it works out, but I really want to enjoy it.
“Have fun and be part of something that’s fun, winning games and experiencing a completely new environment at a different university. I’m really looking forward to all those things.”
Elmore started six of the 13 games he appeared in last season, finishing with 16 tackles and 1.5 sacks. In 25 games as a freshman and sophomore, three of which he started, Elmore had 23 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
Spring game visitors, no shows
A handful of the prospects who were previously reported as visitors for the South Carolina spring game did not show.
Linebackers Dax Hollifield (Shelby, N.C.) and Channing Tindall (Columbia, S.C.) did not attend. Wide receiver Sam Pinckney (Greenwood, S.C.) instead visited Florida State, according to Phil Kornblut of sportstalksc.com.
One of the more surprising guests for the South Carolina spring game was 4-star prospect Brenton Cox, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound strong-side defensive end from Stockbridge High School in Georgia. However, an industry source said Georgia and Ohio State are the teams to beat.
Cox did tell Kornblut he’s giving South Carolina a shot.
“I could see me playing at South Carolina,” Cox said. “Coach Muschamp said they really need pass rushers, they have a young team and I can come in and play. And he needs more players from Atlanta.”
