Derek Boykins
3 star LB Derek Boykins 6'2 215lbs of Concord, NC spent his early years living in Beaufort. He’ll be returning to his native state to play his college football after committing to USC Saturday afternoon while on an official visit. The Gamecocks had been his favorite for an extended period and he chose them over offers from Clemson, Texas, A&M, Louisville, Duke, Michigan, Tennessee, NC State, North Carolina, Kentucky and others.
“The fact that they really need me for me. I’m a real need for them, that’s a big thing,” Boykins said about why the Gamecocks stood out to him thru the recruiting process. “I grew up a Gamecock. I’ve got a South Carolina wallet, had a DJ Swearinger jersey, had a Marcus Lattimore jersey, had a little shirt that had Conner Shaw on it.”
Another key factor for the Gamecocks landing Boykins was Will Muschamp’s individual recruiting attention. He said the two talked most daily and he believes in what the third year Gamecock coach is selling and building.
“They really take care of their players at South Carolina. If you fail over there it’s like you didn’t try,” he said. “They’re fixing to be where they use to be when Swearinger and Clowney were over there. It’s not a big turnaround they’ve got to make, they’re just missing one more step, and hopefully I can be that.”
Boykins is the second commitment for the Gamecocks’ recruiting weekend, both on the defensive side. Defensive end Joseph Anderson of Murfreesboro, TN committed on Friday. He gives the Gamecocks 14 pledges for their 2019 class.
